Volunteering (need to let off some steam)
Ugh, I volunteer at the local rape and abuse crisis center and have a close friend who was raped a few months ago; so a thread in GD where a few posters are bashing volunteering has got me really upset right now. So much for a good night's sleep. :(

I could post that the sky is blue and sure enough one DUer somewhere will say I'm wrong, call me a freeper or say it's the fault of the Obama administration for not changing it Orange 2 days after he was inaugurated.

6. In that poster's case it's most likely regurgitated Marxist drivel form some academic that is...
...out of touch with reality.

7. How on earth can anyone bash volunteering?
In my opinion there are few acts more noble than giving of one's self.

8. i volunteer a lot , literally i maybe volunteerigng upto 20 hours in a given week
and i think they do have a point. some of these social services that volunteers perform should be paid positions but often community organizations dont have the money. hence, because we do it voluntarily and the job gets done, its so its not a paid position. however there is a good possibility that no one would fund it anyway, so whomever we are volunteering for would just not have the power to help communities that are underserved.

there are two sides to a lot of issues. if you believe in what you are doing, you shouldnt need the approval of everyone.

9. Exactly. The BSers seem to be saying that until their socialist revolution happens...
...all us volunteers are patsies of the status quo. A bunch of ideological moranism. We should not let utopian dreams get in the way of helping people here and now in the system we have to work with.

10. yes, but also you need to recognize from his perspective he has a point
maybe we do lower wages, by doing something for free that should legitimately be a paid position.

i wouldnt get too worked up over it. do what you want to do. its your time you are giving away. not his

11. I think it is great to volunteer, but having volunteered a lot over the
years, I have grown to resent it to a degree.

Why?

Because the more time you put into something, the more folks expect it and even be very critical. I once volunteered to put together a fundraiser, it was a profound amount of work. When I asked for help, I could secure only 3 other folks to help me and one wasn't even involved in the organization, she was just a friend who helped.

However the criticism I received for the amount of work I did, was just depressing. Here I raised money, secured great speakers and I got complaints. So the next year the chief complainer asked me to do it again and I said "no" and they were offended.

When I volunteer, unless I am doing something wrong, I don't want to hear bitching from the folks doing nothing.
