14. Tina Weymouth. But no, seriously, any answer that isn't "Janis Joplin" is wrong.
Joan Jett is not a rocker - she's a boring songstress who just plays louder than most women.

Bonnie Raitt and Ethridge both make me think more "Oh, this is just country music through a distortion pedal", but don't make me think "Oh, wow, they're really rockin'!!"

Ann or Nancy Wilson are probably the best choice for living woman rocker.

19. Bonnie was / is more of a blues-based singer-songwriter...
...I like her music but wouldn't label her a rocker. She's especially good as an extended member of the Little Feat family, that whole roots-y yet slightly eccentric edge of the music community.

Same for Etheridge. I just don't see her as a "rocker." I don't know what label...if any...would be the most accurate. "Singer-songwriter" also, I guess.

When I think of female rockers, I think of Joan Jett first. Lita Ford is also on the list but I think it was obvious to all who witnessed her career that she attempted to compensate for what she lacked in natural talent with an overdose of attitude and image. Joan had the look AND the chops.

55. Moe Tucker!
The Velvet Underground were so scary at first that people didn't even notice there was a GIRL back there making that primal racket with the drums. Short hair, no makeup, adrogynous clothes...she had no interest in being a front person or a sex symbol, she just wanted to be the foundation and backbone of some vicious and terrifying noise! And she was. And you just know that even Lou Reed and John Cale weren't willing to make her mad.

Women are expected to be out front, looking sexy, singing, not necessarily doing anything else. I have to give my props to one of first and greatest to say, "fuck that." She was the Rosie the Riveter of rock'n'roll. That scary screaming fighter jet isn't getting off the ground without her. :)

127. One of the worst bands I've ever had the displeasure to see live.
Their suckiness was almost surpassed by the headliner band that evening, Quiet Riot.

Luckily, Saga played in-between, to cleanse the palate.

Where do you think Alanis came from?

But ultimately, music is music. It's like asking who the greatest rocker who's 5'9'', then 5'10'', etc.

One of the best voices in rock history. She can carry off a loud rocker like "Mandinka" or a folk lullaby like "This Is To Mother You" with equal skill.

She had a razor sharp voice with no fear, no mercy. Perfect rock voice, perfect rock attitude.

92. Me, I've just utterly failed to have a career.
But if you heard me, you'd be all like, wait, what? I'm like that.

No really, Bonnie Raitt is good. Even Stevie Nicks, even if she influences Cheryl Crowe, who, like Carly Simon before her, hasn't the greatest sense of pitch, isn't too bad. So Melissa Etheridge, who writes her own songs and performs them, is excellent. Damn near a girl-Springsteen. Lita Ford is astonishing. And the Indigo Girls are like the bombdiggety. A little like femme Simon and Garfunkel? And don't forget Heart! "Barracuda!" "Magic Man!" And maybe we'll count Linda Rondstadt.

I'd say extra props go to Joan Jett and Patty Smyth. Both rule in ways I can't quantify--and so do Tina Turner and Patti La Belle.

Technically, who is the greatest male rocker? I'm putting in for David Lee Roth.

96. I think that the Shangri Las deserve a mention.
Their songs described in great detail what a rocker was. Misunderstood, wrong side of tracks, bad- but good bad and not evil.

This band was set to make a comeback in the midst of the CBGBs scene in 1977. Mary Weiss is actually younger than Debbie Harry and was set to front a reformed Shangri Las with a real rockin' band behind 'em. It is the music fan's great loss that this dream act never happened.
