Is there a song you like by a group/singer you typically hate?
For example, I can't stand Disco or Barry Mannilow, but I like "Copacabana"

I'm not a Rod Stewart fan, but I like "Downtown Train"

Do any of you have songs that fit this description?

1. That song that ends the Bourne movies by Moby.
Can't stand him otherwise, but that song isn't bad.

5. I dislike what many people interpret the song to mean
It was a song about the anger of the death of industry in the Northeast, but it has become a jingoistic, flag waving tune. I don't mind certain flag waving tunes -- that's just not one of them.

I'm not a huge Springsteen fan, but there are four songs of his I really like: "Rosalita", "The Streets of Philadelphia", "The Rising", and (my favorite) "My Hometown".

6. The right wing cynically and dishonestly, and intentionally twisted the meaning
of that song into basically exactly opposite of its true meaning.( at least gotta give the right wingers props for staying consistent in their methodology no matter what situation they apply it to--dishonest; intentionally twisting meanings etc). Its about what you said it is ,but at its core, also about how it all affected one single Vietnam vet.
Born down in a dead man's town, first kick I took when when I took the ground
End up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up.........yup, a real flag waver. But yet lots of Reagan era young people were shallow ( there's a redundancy-Reagan era ,and shallow) enough to just see the flag themed cover and hear the refrain and not listen one bit deeper, all of course encouraged by political elements who stood to lose ground if America's biggest rock star turned out to be a.....LIBERAL.

15. Not so different from what happened to CCR's "Fortunate Son"
...which has been twisted to the point that they use it in TV ads for Memorial Day sales.

I wonder if people even listen to the lyrics of these songs sometimes?

18. good catch; I noticed that too and even talked about that to a middle school music class
( a rock and roll class; one of the few of its kind in the U.S.) about commercial interests twisting music to suit their purposes. We also talked a little about Elvis Costello's song Radio Radio, and some of them understood what he was saying. This was a school in a very progressive neighborhood ( in fact there's a 7th grade teacher there who's also a DUer) where I was the in-house sub, and that teacher trusted me to do stuff like that with his class on occasion ( he's a good, well-informed progressive himself). Anyway, I distinctly remember hearing Fortunate Son in an ad ( very likely the one you're referring to) where they would do the "born to wave the flag; they're red white and blue..." line and leave out the rest; thereby perverting the meaning of John Fogerty's message completely. I remember also pointing out to that class about that time that one of the network news shows had a segment about some anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's and breathlessly exclaimed how "everyone's talking about the Queen" and played segments of The Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen, but kept somehow managing to neglect to play the line "the fascist regime". That was the subject of one of my earliest DU posts, and I sarcastically said I was sure it was simply an innocent oversight by CBS or whichever network it was. It is amazing that anyone could think that Born in the USA was a rah rah Reaganista anthem, but you hit it on the head, some people obviously don't hear the wards , or maybe worse, don't WANT to.

19. I despise Springsteen's music, and that song is close to the top of the list.
Dancing in the Dark is worse, but not by much.

4. One that comes to mind is Too Much Time on My Hands by Styx, who normally annoy me
to the point where I ALWAYS change the station as quickly as possible when I hear them coming on, but they nailed that one. Good, edgy music, and lyrics to match.

When October Goes
Music by Barry Manilow Lyrics by Johnny Mercer

And when October goes
The snow begins to fly
Above the smokey roofs
I watch the planes go by
The children running home
Beneath a twilight sky
Oh, for the fun of them
When I was one of them
And when October goes
The same old dream appears
And you are in my arms
To share the happy years
I turn my head away
To hide the helpless tears
Oh how I hate to see October go
I should be over it now I know
It doesn't matter much
How old I grow
I hate to see October go

10. I love Green Day, but "She's a Rebel" is a real corny lamer.
"She's gonna be the mother of a bomb that's gonna detonate"

Hip, cool Faux-Anarchism = LAME and so 80's/90's.
