1. All I can say, is don’t take it to heart.
Learn what you can, try the meds. However, psychiatric diagnosis is an art, not a science.

2. How long were you examined/questioned?
There are a lot of "doctors" out there willing to make split second decisions (under 10 minute diagnosis) and start handing out pills like candy. Get a second opinion if you feel the need and research the meds they try to put you on. I've watched my sister go through this meat shredder for the last 16 years. She started out with disc pain in her neck and back and now lives a hellish life on more medications that you can shake a stick at, including methadone. Good luck.

3. A VERY long time, basicly over the course of three weeks
3 assessment session, 3.5-4 hours each session. I had 13 test run on me by Wright State University with an interview by the assessment and 4 months of information gathered by my counselor and other psychiatrist through counseling. I think it's thorough enough.

4. *hugs* It was a weird feeling for me finally getting diagnosed, both a bit upset and
relieved all at once.

5. Me too.
You always feel troubled when you get back the results.

6. Yeah. For me it was the duality of "Crap, something is really wrong with me" and relief that
it has a name and possible treatments and I wasn't "crazy" to think I was crazy after all.

7. Good vibes.
I think a proper diagnosis (and no, psychiatry isn't an art, it is science) is a good start, at least you know where you stand now and what you can do to improve your situation. :hi:

8. Wow, sorry to hear that
Maybe that explains all the hate for us Floridians.

I kid, I kid. Sorry bad taste.

Seriously, I hope all works out for you. Take care.

9. At least now you can know what treatment direction to go in
that's the positive side of diagnosing.

The negative side is in dealing with the "label" itself.

Just remember, you are more than just a diagnosis.

Hang in there, sasquatch.

11. I was misdiagnosed with the former (Aspies often are)... As for GAD,
what would separate that from PTSD? (Depending on doc, I am diagnosed with one or the other, but I do meet the criteria for PTSD...)

Not to sound cliché, but how do you feel about that?

13. There's a bright side.
Now you get to use John Astin's line from "Night Court":

"But I'm feeling MUCH better now!"

Hope all's well; hang in there.

14. The first thing you need to know, if you don't already
is that personality disorders are not psychoses. By definition.

Which means that you are not crazy. By definition.

You just have a personality that fits certain diagnosable criteria according to the DSM IV.

It does mean that you might have some issues getting along with others. Period.

This is an issue with which you can deal.
