Is my laptop monitor dying?

For no apparent reason, it will suddenly go black. I cannot make it come back until I have turned it off and back on again. Is this the sign of a dying monitor? Anyone had a problem similar to this or have any other rationale for its' behavior? Thanks.

1. I had a monitor - desktop -

that acted like that before it croaked. I'd turn everything on, and the monitor would stay black. If I restarted a few times, it would finally come back on. Finally, it just didn't come on. I had to get a new one.........................

2. If it is a Vista laptop, it probably isn't the monitor.

Turn off all power saving options and screen saver settings - don't sleep. If it still goes dark, okay, maybe it is the screen. Vista is totally fucked up with respect to power saving and screen savers. On top of that, screen savers are bullshit now. They made sense with CRT displays because you could burn in imprints. LCD (and other) contemporary displays don't do that. They are ornamental at best. Power saving does make sense but screen savers do not.

5. It's a Windows XP Home Edition.

I will try turning off the power savings and the screensaver and see if that helps. Thank you.
