Songs that got airplay through commercials
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 02:38 AM by CreekDog
i think there's a trend of songs breaking through due to being part of a commercial rather than the radio route. In a recent interview, John Mellencamp said that General Motors was a better record label than Columbia.

And that got me thinking of how most new songs I hear and come to like I first hear as commercials:

song (Cloud Cult: Lucky Today)

commercial (Esurance)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FslaZo71twY

song (Emilie Mover: Brand New)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4JtfAyQJoc
commercial (Sears) or maybe it was Grey's Anatomy (which I don't watch)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdPGAtvP4z8

song (Happy Happens: Smile On)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfrlfaLZtJ8
commercial (San Diego)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=274LwVU4X3s

and the big daddy: song (John Mellencamp: Our Country)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0HTff63E0I
commercial (Chevrolet Trucks)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwJ8PUV8lT0&feature=related

and of course, this song would not have been famous without this commercial:

(okay i apologize for that last one) :wtf: :hide:

1. Ingrid Michaelson / Old Navy

That was her first major gig. Then a Gray's Anatomy finale that really launched her. Her new album kicked off with a Mott's apple juice commercial starring Marcia Cross:

It's funny. Commercials are the new radio.

2. Apple is a good record label, too...
They've broken lots of great songs in their commercials, even though it's easy to get sick to death of them within a couple weeks from overplay.

I still contend the 60-second commercial version of that Coldplay "When I Ruled the World" song is WAY better than the full length version.

Jet "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"
Kings of Leon "Molly's Chamber"
Propellerheads "Take California"

...and tons more I'm spacing this morning.
