I have a dog question: Pooka is a rescue dog, reportedly
turned in because he was supposed to be a Chihuahua. He looks like a spitz although he has no papers. His first vet record in October says he weighed 8.7 pounds, at his visit in December he weighed 19. If those numbers are right, he must have been really starved. He's pretty much settled in and bosses our other dog around even though Guinness is twice his size.

If I don't walk the dogs first thing in the morning, Pooka is apt to take a dump in the house. That I understand.

Pooka occasionally piddles, and last night he piddled on the foot of my bed. Is this because he has a tiny, nervous bladder, because he is marking his territory or should I have him checked for a bladder infection?

1. Is he neutered?
If not, he could be marking territory. If he walks around piddling, it could be bladder stones. Best to have him checked by the vet.

Small dogs are often prone to bladder stones... I've had two dogs who had surgery for them.

2. "Pooka occasionally piddles"
Is there usually any rhyme or reason behind it or does it seem random?

6. I didn't notice any piddling until my three college kids came home
for the summer. He might have been piddling before and I just didn't notice. He doesn't like to be picked up and I think one of my kids picked him up a few times so now he engages in occasional pre-emptive piddling when she's around.

So, he either piddles because someone is threatening to pick him up or it's in a place like a chair leg or next to a pair of shoes left on the floor. It's not constant, the wet blanket this morning was the first time I'd noticed in a couple days.

7. How long has he been with you, and is this the first experience with the kids?
When you say he doesn't like to be picked up, is that by anybody including you? Do you know his rescue "story" of how he got into a rescue situation? Also, I didn't catch how old he is.

Sorry for all the questions.

14. We got him last winter after Christmas, and he was a little shy

at first; he didn't even bark the first few days. I thought he was settled in, but I think he got used to two quiet adults as opposed to three college kids. As I'm typing this, I realize that one of the "college kids" is actually my high school graduate. She was living with us all winter, but spent so much time at school and doing homework that I forgot she was around. Effectively, Pooka spent all his time with me and my husband.

He's almost 2 years old. I don't pick him up, I just let him hop into my lap. He lets my husband pick him up, but my husband is incharge as far as the dogs are concerned.

5. I'd get him checked out....
When my Siberian began doing that, I took her to the vet and she had emergency surgery for a bladder stone the size of a golf ball.

he has been well housetrained but still has an occasional accident. They have trained him to go on a pad by leaving a teeny bit of his urine on it.

Edit: He's a real sweetheart and his coming over to sit on my lap when he sensed I was very lonely and sad is the reason I have a wonderful dog of my own now!

13. I have a purebred Chihuahua and it's been almost impossible to
housebreak her. But at least I have her trained to go on a pee pad. She's real good about that.
