I just bought 4 bottles of this Special K Vanilla protein shake.
I'm going to try to use it as an aid for blood sugar management.

Has anyone ever tried this stuff?

I have them chilling now.

Are they going to make me puke?

4. Just tried one myself (the chocolate)
Not bad; I have serious doubts that these things are as healthy as they claim (they're full of sugar), but I'm also trying to regulate my caloric intake and thought these would be preferable to a cheeseburger.

They taste great, by the way.

5. Just had the vanilla....very tasty.
29 grams of carbs (including sugar) per bottle. I shoot for 35 grams per meal.

That means that for a meal, I can have a bottle, and maybe some tuna or roast beef or something.

I'll try the chocolate next.

6. but ...why would you want to do this...instead of eating something
at lunch to go with the tuna or roast beef?

9. Whatever I would eat to go with the tuna or roast beef...
Would most likely contain carbs.

Now, the goal with carbs, when you have diabetes, is to limit them to a certain number per meal, in my case, 35.

So, I could have a piece of bread, which has a substantial amount of carbs and is not very filling, or I could drink this, which is loaded with vitamins, and more importantly, will keep my hunger satisfied for awhile.

You get VERY hungry on insulin, and you need to find something to kill the hunger without blowing out the carb limit.

Also, unlike a piece of bread, which has no protein, these drinks have a substantial amount of protein, which slows down the absorbtion of carbs, therefore helping to keep your blood sugar from spiking.

From strictly a blood sugar standpoint, you could eat a ton of meat or fish with this drink, and the sugar level would remain ok.

:hi:

12. Yes, because it is a heavy liquid that fills you up...
with the benefits of protein and vitamins.

It's all a balancing act....very very difficult.

Bread is useless for me because it is not filling....soup is better but lacks a ton protein, etc.

13. Bread is an issue but aren't some breads better than others?
I know you need to compound carbs with a lot of protein, right.

15. Whole grain breads are the best from a health standpoint....
and they are good for diabetics to eat in moderation, but because of this "moderation" required, it is hard to satisfy your hunger with them.

14. Or I should say...
bread is not filling unless I eat a ton of it, which of course, is not good for diabetics.

17. but wouldn't a bunch of salad or veggies be better?
or is it more for desert? (I don't have too bad of a sweet tooth so I tend to think of maximum chewing enjoyment rather than a sweet drink)

18. The problem that I personally have with that is...
with the amount of insulin I take, a salad does not satisfy my hunger. So if I eat a salad, I feel fine for awhile, but then I get ravenous, and try to eat everything in sight.

Salads and veggies are wonderful for diabetics, but I have a hunger issue that I am trying to work around.

Everyone is different in this regard...

19. believe me I can relate to hunger issues
and I really need to get a handle on the eating/weight problems, myself or I am going to tip into diabetes as well. Its in the family and I am heavy and have always had mild blood sugar problems.

I hope the shakes help and good to know more about all of this. Thanks.

20. Anytime you want to discuss anything...let me know...
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 01:27 PM by LeftyFingerPop
I'm not an expert, but I do know a few things.

As a teenager, and in my early 20's, I was thin.

Then I lifted weights for a good portion of my life, and bulked up. I was a lot bigger, but in good shape.

In 1995, I went to an all day memorial day party....food and drink for about 8 hours.

The next day when I woke up, I surely thought I was dying. I literally drank 2 gallons of water, straight from the jug, and I was still thirsty. I was urinating every 5 minutes...it felt like I was melting.

So I went to the doctor, and got diagnosed, just like that I had diabetes.

I wear glasses, and for the first month after I was diagnosed, I had perfect 20/20 vision WITHOUT my glasses. My blood sugar had gone high enough to change the water content of my eyeballs, thus changing their shape and enabling my vision to improve. That was so strange, but eventually, my vision returned to where I needed the glasses.

I guess the reason I am telling you all this...you do not have to be grossly overweight to get type 2 diabetes if it runs in your family.

My family is riddled with it...just one of those things.

However, you may be able to stave it off if you do lose weight.

Do the best you can...it is a shitty disease.

edit spelling

7. I have a pretty voracious appetite, though
I'm waiting to see if this keeps my tummy satisfied for the 4 hours that they claim. I guess I'd be content with 3 hours. I like the idea of a tuna chaser.

Is this a lifestyle for you, or just a momentary necessary evil?

The insulin makes me so damn hungry...I'm looking for something to fill me up without blowing out my carb limit. See above post! :hi:

Not many calories either, and they make a low sodium version.

I wish it had some protein in it though. I think that is the key for me.
