So will our current depression revive Hobo Culture?
Like it did in the 30's?

Will young men looking for work, ride the rails and live in hobo camps?

Which Steinbeck novel will it more resemble - Grapes of Wrath or Tortilla Flat?

If so does this mean we'll create another Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan?

1. in the 1980s
i remember the hobo camps along the creeks in the coastal SoCal town i lived in...that's when this whole mess began, but i am sure there are new ones like this in Sacramento:

2. maybe road warrior hobo culture
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 02:03 PM by datasuspect
stabby punk kids hopped on meth, crack, and inhalants spanging at convenience stores.

the copkultur/punishment ethic driven ethos of eternal surveillance would probably stifle any resurgence of the noble hobo of the 1930s.

and if it did happen, they'd make a reality show of it.

11. Yep, lot's of shanking going on. Since vagrants are harassed as much as violent criminals...
there won't be much of a deterrent to robbing an looting wherever possible.

3. If it does, I'd like to be referred to as Banjo Eddie.
Though my name is not Eddie and I don't play the banjo. Just seems like a good hobo name.

15. Yeah - didn't Dashell ride the rails in his day?
I also remember him telling McCarthy and friends to fuck off, and if he was on Joe's list he considered it a badge of honor.

former employment that he later regretted.
He was a hell of a man
and a truly great American

Police Shutting Down New Sacramento Tent City

Around a hundred people have lived there since the Winter Shelter at Cal Expo closed July 1st. That includes some of the homeless who camped at the big Tent City along the American River earlier this year. But many say they don’t know where they’ll go.

--

Tent City Version 2.0 is smaller – in both size and population. The first one sprawled for blocks along the river. This one is nestled on a narrow plot of grass and dirt between a Volunteers of America Homeless Shelter and a gospel mission. VOA counted about 50 tents and 100 people. By the time I got there Thursday, some had already left – and others were starting to pack.

This is the second Tent City for Lloyd Chaffins – and he says it’s his last. Chaffins says he just wants to be left alone.
