I've got an interview tomorrow.
A typist job at my childrens' school. I'm nervous, but the HR woman sounded really nice on the phone. I'm not sure how many others are being interviewed for the position. Any advice as to how to WOW them over? Getting a full-time permanent County job would be awesome. I've got my first mortgage and utilities bills looming and taunting me that I'm supposed to be a grown-up now.

I'm guessing I should wear clothes. :P

3. I figured
Intermediate school doesn't seem like the appropriate place to wear just a feather boa and pasties. :D

17. Well duh. You have to add high heels to complete the ensemble.

2. Clothes would be a very good start.
Have you already taken the typing test, or will they be giving one?

7. I took it
I took a couple of County tests earlier this year. I got on lists for Typist/Office Specialist and Secretary I. I've gotten several position opening alerts, but this is the first interview I've gotten. And this is the one I want the most, since it's the school system that my children attend.

Posting on DU all these years has really kept my typing skills up to par! LoL. I was a state-employed secretary in my past life.

5. Serious advice:
1) Be yourself.

2) Exhibit a relaxed confidence.

3) Carry yourself so they can envision you working with them and "fitting in".

4) Firm handshakes with a gentle smile while looking the person in the eye.

5) Gently stress to them WHY and HOW you CAN and WILL do the job.

Best of luck to you!

Good advice. Eye contact isn't a strong point with me, so I'll keep it in mind while I'm there.

11. Sure
But there are no more typewriters involved. It's all computers. Things have changed so much since I was a secretary during the stone age of typewriter ribbon and white out. LoL.

28. The best question I ever asked, over 25 years ago was
If I do get this position, what exactly would my job duties include?

It was for an entry-level mailroom position, and it worked. Of course, that was many years ago, when corporate mailrooms were far busier than they are now, but it was a good question, and probably still would be.

Of course, you've probably already been interviewed since you posted the message yesterday, but my best wishes to you!

37. Thanks everyone.
I'm not sure how well I did though. Hard to be objective critiquing myself. I don't think I was as confident as I could have been. I got tongue-tied a few times and wasn't happy with some of the answers I came up with. Oh well...We shall see.

Thank you all for the good thoughts.
