Couple's 13 y.o. Girl Actually A Boy (They Really Didn't Know)
<snip>

A CHINESE couple raised their only child for 13 years in the belief it was a girl, until a visit to the local hospital alerted them to the fact that he was really a boy, state media said.

The unidentified couple, from the central city of Zhengzhou, were fooled by their child's underdeveloped sexual organs, dressing him in girl's clothes and teaching him to go to the women's room, the Zhengzhou Evening News reported.

They did not realize anything was wrong until they were baffled by a "reaction in the lower half of his body" whenever he watched pretty women on TV, the paper said.

The worried parents took their child to the hospital, where a physical check-up corrected their mistake about the child's sex, according to the paper.

1. Sorry, needs corroboration...
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 07:59 AM by JHB
...I've heard of dumb parents, but come on.

Without some other corroboration, it's just another Bat-Boy sighting.

ON EDIT: From responses 2 & 4, OK point taken.

On the other hand, if that's the case it's hardly global news, is it?

2. last paragraph of article
Doctors concluded that he was suffering from a rare disease causing sexual organs to be somewhat hidden from view, and the boy was subsequently treated in a three-hour-long, successful operation, it said.

4. um, read up on gender ambiguity and androgyny
as much as 1.0% of the population is born with ambiguous genitalia for various reasons. undecended testicles and slight variances in hormones near the time of delivery can cause even seasoned ob/gyns to get it wrong.

the particulars of this case might be unusual, but the general concept is not especially rare at all. the problem is that it's so taboo to discuss, so it appears far more rare than it is. most such people get raised as girls and eventually have surgery to conform the body to the social image. it's actually quite rare to correct the social image.

11. I have a cousin that is an Hermaphrodite....tough life...
She was operated on as a toddler to make her as female on the outside as possible, but internally, she had both male and female organs. In her adulthood, it is obvious she would have been better off if they had made her into a male. She has a deep voice, stocky male build and walk and to my knowledge has never had a romantic relationship with either sex.

14. Good thing his wiring
alerted his parents to his natural preference. Goes to show. Despite being raised as a woman the brain expressed what it was attracted to.

5. I live in China and i can tell you that in the local papers it said...
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 08:07 AM by DarkSim
...That the child had been circumcised at a young age but the operation had gone "wrong", so, the doctors decided to just tell the parents it was a girl.

There was also a striking interview of the parents. If anyone lives in Beijing (and reads good enough mandarin to read a news paper), grab a recent copy of "Central news daily" and have a read.

6. Huh?
"they were baffled by a "reaction in the lower half of his body" whenever he watched pretty women on TV, the paper said"

I have two boys, I've never observed their reactions to "pretty women on TV", at least not in their "lower half of their body".

What were these parents doing?
