Disabled, Pregnant Statue Coming To Trafalgar Square
<snip>

A LARGER than life marble sculpture of a disabled pregnant woman has been chosen to join Britain's greatest naval hero and the proud lions that gaze down over historic Trafalgar Square.

Artist Marc Quinn's work was selected late yesterday from among a group of six finalists, including a pair of wooden Tomahawk cruise missiles, for a 12-month stint on an empty plinth in the central London square.

Quinn, 40, who once made a refrigerated cast of his head using four litres of his own blood, said he hoped his portrait of a friend, Alison Lapper Pregnant, would introduce some femininity to the square.

Quinn's model for the project revealed a voluptuous eight-months pregnant woman without arms and with stunted legs - and a proud and direct gaze.

The final sculpture, to be put in place in spring 2005, will be carved out of one block of white marble and will stand 4.7 metres high.

it will be the second statue that portrays a disabled person in London and in the same place.
The first statue portraying a disabled person is Nelson

2. Think you might find this will never happen: Trafalgar Square is
strictly a military monument. Blair's appeasement of anti-war groups since last year's huge anti-Iraq demos has seen a slide to okaying all kinds of quasi arty crap.

Any exhibit on the empty plinth needs the Monarch's personal, written authority.
