Is it possible to go to an Italian restaurant without hearing "That's Amore" and "Mambo Italiano?"
Seriously, is it even THEORETICALLY possible?

Fuck, there are at least six Italian restaurants within ten minutes of my girlfriend's front door, and not ONE of these places fails to play both of these songs on an hourly basis.

Sorry to rant, but when I'm fucking eating I don't give a flying fuck about the technical term for what happens when the moon hits your eye like a big fucking pizza pie.

These restaurants all play the same 8-10 songs from a tape apparently called "Biggest Stereotypical Italian hits that No Self-Respecting Restaurant Actually Located in Italy Would Ever Torture its Customers With." I've been to Italy, I KNOW they have more than 8-10 songs there.

FUCK!

1. You need to get out more
Come to the Boston North End for some excellent Italian food, and no crappy pseudo Italian music.

2. Apparently.
But you'd think the DC Metro area would be better about this. Downtown and surrounding area, and it's all the same shitty music that we've all heard too often in every Italian restaurant I've tried.

I'd love to go to Boston and try what you're recommending, but isn't it a shame that I have to travel that far to avoid Dean Martin when I want Italian food? :(

3. I'm so sorry!
If you do get a chance to come, here is a list of restaurants from the North End, all within walking distance of each other:

Of these, Piccola Venezia is my favorite.

4. Bookmarked, and thanks.
What really sucks is that the food in a lot of these local restaurants is great, but the caricature of Italian life is just intolerable.

It reminds me of a place in London I saw in the 80's; it was a hamburger joint and had every stereotypical piece of decor you'd expect not only from a Texas bar & grill but also a "Happy Days" era burger and shake joint, COMBINED. The word "American" was in the title of the restaurant, and I was embarrassed to walk in there. My Brit friend at the time, who had never been to Canada or the States, took one look and said "Tell me your lot doesn't live like this." I answered "Nobody in the history of the country ever has."

15. Balmer's Little Italy is great.
But then again, no self-respecting Balmerian would ever consider themselves part of the "DC Metro Area", BWI and BW Parkway not withstanding.

9. It's sort of like the Chinese water torture.
It took a while to get to this point, but I love the food at these restaurants and just can't take that shitty music any more after several hundred plays. I've been reduced to taking their food home and eating it there.

If at any time you've ever had something start to annoy you gradually and eventually just really get on your nerves, you'd probably understand. If not, you wouldn't.

10. I tried to teach a bird to whistle "That's Amore"
I spent many weeks whistling it to him. He would get really excited hearing it, but he never did whistle it back to me.

FWIW

14. Do they cook real Italian food?
Or is it stereotypically Italian food?

You want a good Italian restaurant not too far from you?
Try Fratelli's in Cheverly.

You want a great Italian restaurant not too far from you?
Try Il Pizzico in Rockville.

:hi:
