I'm gonna go with John Hartford, because while he had a rabid following, he NEVER got the recognition he deserved. For what it's worth, I thonk he KNEW he had the rabid following, and for John, he probably prized that more than being a "rock star."

2. Absolutely.
I posted "Pink Moon" here a short while back, noting its resurgence due to that Volkswagen commercial...a LOT of people responded, clearly remembering the commercial, and noting what a shame it was that the spotlight wasn't a little brighter in Nick's lifetime.

7. I was reading the Vanity Fair article about Heath Ledger. He wanted to make a movie about Nick
Drake. I think the article said that he had made some sort of video of Nick Drake's songs. I should have paid more attention, I'd forgotten about it until just now.

...I remember the CD reissue of "Sister Lovers" and the claim in Rolling Stone that it was some kind of lost masterpiece, but when these guys were MAKING the music, I never heard a single NOTE.

Such is the music business, eh?

12. Danny AND Roy Buchanan...
...although there is a degree of tinfoil hat "conspiracy theory" surrounding whether or not Roy REALLY hung himself in that jail cell...

Buchanan and Gatton, for me, were "twin sons from different mothers"...and you're right, Danny DID get a little, but it just wasn't enough. The record industry just doesn't know how to market musicians who don't write songs about teenage boys getting laid.

That's why I thank God on a regular basis that we still have Buddy Guy...one CRAZY SON OF A BITCH who can play like no other man alive.

Magic Sam was one of the greatest guitar players ever and is virtually forgotten now, and another was Guitar Slim.

best guitar players I ever saw in the blues bars in Chicago were Son Seals , and J.B. Hutto ( who was carrying on the legacy of the great Elmore James). And Little Walter? In the immortal words of Arthur Conley: "he's the king of em all y'all".

41. I have been a fan of blues for nearly 50 years, and I am still finding
music online by artists whose names I have hears, but not their music. I am just now discovering Memphis Minnie,Blind Willie Johnson and Louis Jordan. If not for the internet, I would probably never heard their music.

Most of these people were never appreciated, screwed out of their rightful income and discarded. I recall Eric Burden stating that British musicians of the '60's discovered the height of American culture - the Blues- in America's trash can. Sadly, he is right.
They are black musicians, therefor their art did not count or matter to most people in their own nation.

It is yet another fucking disgrace from a nation that routinely spits on its creative people while elevating the greedy and stupid.

30. I drove from Albuquerque to Chicago with James Jr. a few years ago--he idolized his dad
maybe a little too much, because he had some of the same problems . He was a brilliant bass player in his own right, but had a bad problem with alcohol too, and was so broke that I gave him a few bucks when I put him on the Greyhound to Detroit so he could get something to eat when he got there. James Sr. was, in his son's words, a musical genius.

36. I learned a bit about James, many years ago...
...and yes, I knew who he was and what he was. Once again, that's the music business for you...a damned shame.

For anyone who'd like a clearer picture regarding the scope of his contribution, I found the following:

http://www.bassland.net/jamersonhits.htm

This list of recordings is started from the list on the back of the Jamerson Tribute T-Shirt (let me know if you are interested in purchasing one). I do not believe this list is complete but will get back with updates as I become aware of them. The songs were recorded with electric bass unless otherwise noted (U = Upright Bass). Some songs include two bassplayers (the other bassist being Bob Babbitt or Tony Newton).

From the Detroit Free press story (by Brian McCollum) on Jamerson "In all, he performed on nearly 30 No. 1 pop hits -- toppling the record commonly attributed to the Beatles. On the R&B charts, nearly 70 of his performances went to the top."

37. I don't think he ever will be fully appeciated...
...human nature likes to put people in a box, as quickly as possible, and for a guy who wore as many hats as Frank, that just doesn't work.

Ringo Starr had a great quote about Bob Dylan in Rolling Stone about a year ago, how when you attend a Bob Dylan concert you "get the Bob Bob wants to give you that night."

Frank, like Bob, did it for Frank first, and if the audience "got it," great, and if they didn't...

...well...

I never got to see FZ live but I can definitely tell that from all the live concerts and bootlegs that I've listened to. He wasn't afraid to present a different show every night because the crowds were different. Look at Roxy & Elsewhere, then look at something like Broadway The Hard Way. I think the reason the MOI (Mothers Of Invention) got to where they are is because they were an ever-evolving, mutating self-entity - something that a lot of bands aren't. That's the reason that bands like MOI, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones will survive decades from now - and still be discovered by countless fans. And I think FZ had envisioned it that way.

43. I saw Frank live three times...
1). With the Flo & Eddie "Mothers Fillmore" band at Boston Music Hall with Chuck Berry (!) as the opening act. FILTHIEST show I have ever seen in my life. My brother set me up with a blind date. Very shy girl who looked like Carole King on the cover of her "Tapestry" album. She wore a white turtleneck sweater with a big peace medal and after the few songs featuring multiple references to bodily fluids did not say another word to me for the rest of the evening.

2). The Napoleon Murphy Brock / George Duke / Ruth Underwood "Roxy & Elsewhere" band at Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos. Small venue, rotating stage, and front row seats. George Duke stuck his tongue out and bugged his eyes at me and I doubled over laughing. This was one of THE MOST musically competent bands in Zappa's career. Duke was AMAZING, but then again, so was the entire BAND. Opening act was a solo Tom Waits who had just released his first album.

3). The Bongo Fury Band with Captain Beefheart as the opening act, Berkeley Community Theater. Frank and the Captain sadly did NOT share the stage that night...seemed odd, but I guess they had their reasons...but Frank EFFING WAILED on guitar that night, especially on "Black Napkins."

Loved him, miss him, he will never be replaced.

46. Brock was in the Bongo Fury band too...
...he had one solo where Zappa was doing this comedy riff about Brock being the Wolfman, and Brock was prowling the stage, sort of crouching, blowing this slow, low, obscene sax solo...kind of like slowing down Bobby Keys' "Brown Sugar" solo, that really nasty honking groove, with the famous Zappa "ba DUM, ba DUM, ba DUM" bass throb going on behind it...that "Illinois Enema Bandit" rhythm section feel.

45. My Shannon Hoon story:
When "No Rain" was a hit, so was San Jose FM rock station KOME. The morning guys, Blazy & Bob, had regular remote broadcasts from local bars and such, as well as in-studio performances. During one of these times, Blind Melon came to the studio and REFUSED TO PLAY NO RAIN.

I think you know where this story is going.

Because the song was HOT, Blazy & Bob HAD TO keep playing it on their show, but for the next few weeks took a swipe at the band for being dicks every time they did.

When Hoon died, Blazy & Bob reported it, and you can tell that they were still pissed about the appearance on their show.

A similar thing happened a few years ago when Todd Rundgren appeared on Howard Stern's show in his "TRI" (Todd Rundgren Interactive) persona and only wanted to talk about TRI. Stern wanted him to play "Hello It's Me" and Rundgren wouldn't step out of his Devo wannabe character. Stern trashed him for months after that.

52. "Rickover's Dream"...
...but it's got to be the version from "An Evening With Windham Hill Live."

Michael was another musician who had a remarkable gift and...on occasion...insisted on using another not-so-remarkable gift (his singing voice)...

...but that "Evening With..." version of "Rickover's Dream" is one of those "soundtrack of your life" songs. I have all KINDS of good and bad memories attached to that one.

55. It's the Neil Young - Frank Zappa Syndrome...
...you REALLY wanted to hear Frank WAIL on the guitar...Black Napkins, Zoot Allures, Muffin Man...but the ticked you paid for was for the show where Frank did that "henarunahenaruna" comedy stuff all night. It was still Frank, and you figured "Well, at least I got to see Frank..."

...you REALLY wanted to hear Neil do "Down By The River" or "Cinnamon Girl" but the ticket you paid for was the "Tonight's The Night" tour, where Nils and Crazy Horse and Neil spent all day shooting pool and smoking weed and drinking tequila and at the show only played songs from "Tonight's The Night, and you figured "At least I got to see Neil..."

And for me, "Rickover's Dream" was a similar thing...when I wanted to hear Michael, and hear him do that criss-crossing of the base notes and the dum...dum..dum...POW thump of the strings, and Michael wanted to sing instead, I figured "It's still Michael..."

59. Jazz guitarists Jimmy Raney and Lenny Breau
Raney worked with Stan Getz for several years and replaced Tal Farlow in Red Norvo's combo. He won Downbeat magazine's Critic's Poll as the best jazz guitarist on one occasion. What's amazing is that he was almost totally deaf. I heard the guy play live and he was phenomenal. I would rank him right up there with guys like Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, and Barney Kessel.

Lenny Breau I think was simply the greatest jazz guitarist in the world. His style of playing, like pianist giant Bill Evans' style adapted to the guitar made it sound at times like two guitars were playing at the same time. He played the instrument fully, fingerpicking and playing chords and solo lines together. There is a small hardcore group of fans who recognize Breau's absolutely stunning greatness, but he never earned as great a name on the guitar as he should have. It's too bad that he was murdered at a relatively young age because otherwise I think he would have been a universally recognized giant on the guitar.

I'd also like to mention classical pianist and composer Cecile Chaminade (1857 - 1944). She was a very gifted composer and wrote some amazing pieces like Scarf Dance and Autumn, the latter which is my favorite piece of classical music. She was quite celebrated for her compositions in Europe and the U.S. during her time, but in the second half of the 20th century her name and her pieces fell into complete obscurity. You never hear her compositions on the classical radio stations and recordings of her wonderful music are hard to find. A symphonic arrangement of Autumn was recorded in about 1955 (I used to have the record) and it was the most passionate and thrilling piece of classical music I have ever heard.
