I mildly disagree with the correlation of one of your answers to the premise of the question though. I think the Birthers, while being totally ridiculous and obnoxious whackjobs, are somewhat of a serious threat and should not be underestimated. They are essentially there to do the same thing to Obama that they did to Clinton during his early years in office with Vince Foster and Paula Jones -build up a climate of suspicion and distrust of his character and integrity with the media and the public (even if the charges leveled against him are malicious and baseless). This subsequently then allows them to build upon this climate of distrust and suspicion as a foundation for witch-hunt styled investigations in a mould similar to the Kenneth Starr investigation. I think the birthers are being funded by the same people who promoted the conspiracy theories about Clinton and I think, based on what they did to Clinton, they should be taken seriously
