Ugg...I went to the beach with my kids today and ended up sunburned
I used sun block but I am so damn pale that I burn just thinking about going in the sun. I just should have stayed home. Does sun block really work anyway?

1. It does but you have to KEEP reapplying frequently
Especially if you sweat or swim alot. I was at the beach last week and its so easy to see where I missed applying sunblock...Very patchy sunburn....

5. Yup, that was the problem. I got caught up in playing with the kids
and making sand castles with them. Next thing I now, I have a burn.

2. You need to replace it every year...
and you need a high SPF (sun protection factor) rating. We're very fair-skinned and use Coppertone's "Waterbabies" with an SPF of 50, and have not had any problems with burning except for one time, when the sunscreen we used was left over from the summer before.

3. I once made the mistake of not applying sunscreen when I was in the Florida Keys.
The thing was, I stupidly thought because I would be doing swimming and snorkling exclusively as opposed to sunbathing, I didn't really need sunscreen.

The result was probably the worst sunburn I've ever suffered in my life, exclusively on my back. Did that ever burn....and itch, too! It itched, but unlike say mosquito bites, scratching the itch didn't temporarily relieve the itch, it just...itched. Not fun.

Although the Keys were so darn beautiful I still say it was worth it.

6. Yes, that stuff is the best. I have not had a burn in maybe 10 years.
Darn kids who want to go to the beach.

7. The new spray sunblock seems to work quite well...
kept me from burning in the California high desert last June, and in Arizona in May... and I'm pretty pale/ginger.

8. Anything above SPF 30 should work fine.
I use SPF 50 for all of my farmer-tan maintenance needs.

10. Someone told me that anything over 50 is just overkill.
Not sure about that. Something about 50 really being the max. Have you heard that? I usually only go for about 30-ish anyway.

16. I don't know the science, But I'd say that's about right.
I can put on 50 and walk around all day in the sun and come home with the exact same farmer-tan.

I've never used anything higher than that, but I don't see why I'd need to.

SPF50 does seem to me to be the top end.

11. Now that sounds like a good idea...we are going camping at a beach this weekend
and I think I might get one of those. Today I was just at a beach at a pond...I bet I need some kind of t-shirt if I'm at the ocean for two or three days. The shirt seems really protective.

14. my mom got me one for my birthday
and I wear it whenever I'm out in the sun. Land's End makes good ones, and if you have a Sears nearby, check them out. Well worth it.

12. I'm that pale too. Yes, sunblock really does work.
I went out one day - it was warm, and cloudy, and there was enough UV to cause severe burns to require me to take a week off of work. I did not wear sunscreen that day at all. Recently I went out to the pool, on a blazing hot day with a wonderful Carolina Blue sky... and even though I thought I applied sunblock everywhere (yes - EVERYWHERE!), apparently I missed a couple of spots - and got burned. Though it obviously worked as I did apply there earlier - otherwise it would have been far far worse.

13. I went up to the cottage a few weeks ago. I had sunblock with me and
lay down for 'just a few minutes' before I was to put on the cream. I fell asleep. Three hours later....

20. Welcome to the club
I actually got a second degree sunburn on my back last Tuesday. Today is the first day I've been able to wear a normal bra. And even though I'm not raw or blistered any more, I'm itchy as hell.

Yes, sunblock works, but like others have said, you have to keep re-applying it.

A big beach umbrella can be helpful too.

21. What SPF are you using?
it provides a degree of protection. Nothing really protects like clothing or a good beach umbrella though.
