UPDATE: One of eight people injured in a sport-utility vehicle that was rammed by a minvan early Saturday morning died this afternoon. The Cook County medical examiner's office said that Stephanie Herrera, 18, of Northlake, was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Chicago.

An SUV full of friends was lost on the West Side over the weekend when a minivan suddenly slowed when passing them, then made a U-turn and rammed the SUV, causing it to roll over and injuring all eight people inside, prosecutors said in court today.

Two of the passengers remain in critical condition with severe head trauma. Injuries to the others ranged from fractured vertebra and broken bones to a punctured lung, authorities said.

The driver of the van was not hurt, and this afternoon Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil set $500,000 bail for him. Shalimar Santiago, 27, of the 3200 block of West North Avenue, is charged with eight counts of aggravated battery.

6. Well, I think it leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
Was it truly a random act of violence, or was the asshole in the minivan provoked? Nothing good ever happens after 2am... Come on down to New Orleans if you want to see martial law in action. The National Guard is still patrolling some streets, and the body count hasn't noticeably diminished, as far as I can tell. The thugs just wait until they've moved on.
