1. It was written by a Mormon.
Aside from them having more kids than an average kindergarten, you'd think Mormons didn't understand the existence of sex at all...

2. It may be "sexless" in the literal sense, but those novels have more BDSM than a fetish club
Seriously, those novels are filled to the brim with sexual innuendo and (covert) bd/sm moments -- these make the novels quite fun indeed. The film tended to literalize the sexuality so it's more of a basic teen obstructed-love nightmare (see Romeo and Juliet, Splendor in the Glass, et. al.) I still enjoyed the film though and the two young actors playing Bella and Edward (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) performed brilliantly.

I can't imagine that Stephanie Meyer (the author) -- even though she is a Mormom -- didn't have a twinkle in her eye when she wrote lines about the highly sexually appealing Edward restraining himself from f*cking Bella/killing Bella simultaneously -- Edward is addicted to Bella's "scent" (the very scent of her blood and the double meaning of course) so much so that it could drive him to kill her (or f*ck her or both). I find the novels marvelously naughty and much more engaging than the overtly sexual Laura Hamilton type stuff. (Edit -- As I ponder this, Edward's behavior is very Dom though he may be a switch since he has deliberately placed himself in a masochistic situation and he even describes himself as a masochistic lion for having fallen in love with the lamb).

It would be fun to figure out the bdsm orientations of the Twilight characters. I don't think we are supposed to discuss such things on DU but in theory this would be a fun thread indeed!

So, I take your point that it has redeeming qualities, despite being boink-free

the boy who loves her so much he has no eyes for anyone else
he watches her at night
he watches out for her by day
he loves her so much
he loves her so much she can even have a real boyfriend and not a vampire boyfriend because it is important to him that she "live" before she dies
