In the world of movie second bananas, Wedge Antilles is a very underrated character.
I mean, this is a guy who survived BOTH Death Star assaults, and he didn't have The Force, or Han Solo's incredible luck.

Can we get a shout-out for Wedge Antilles?

1. Among Star Wars geeks, he is a legend.
Wedge is an example of a guy who is always there when you need him, always gives 100%, demonstrates outstanding leadership, and survives everything that is thrown at him, yet seldom gets a share in the glory or the spotlight.

5. No. He was the "other" X-Wing pilot who survived Episode IV.

7. He was Luke's friend on Tatooine
along with Bigs Darklighter. Near the beginning of 'A New Hope' we learn that both Bigs and Wedge had already left Tatooine to go to the Academy, leaving Luke to loiter on Uncle Owen's moisture farm, waste time in Anchorhead with his other friends and bulls-eye wamp rats from his T-16.

9. That's Tank AKA (Comic Spoilers)
Lt. Janek Sunber (I think I spelled that wrong). Wedge is Corellian, though one comic did make the mistake of having Wedge be one of Luke's Tatooinian friends.

Besides, don't feel bad for Wedge, he got his own comic book series and was the main character (besides Corran Horn) in an 8 novel series.

30. You're right, of course...
and, sadly, this is not the first time I've been wrong on this. Sometime back in the 80's a friend had to prove to me that it was Biggs and Tank, not Biggs and Wedge, that Luke refers to early in the first film.

For some reason, my Wedge/Tank confusion persists.

31. No problem.
Like I've said, even a comic writer has gotten it wrong. Someone who got paid to contribute to the GFFA.

3. In the comics, Wedge was potrayed as rather miffed.
I agree with that portrayal.

4. To be remembered in the Star Wars universe, you have to be green or have antlers or something.
Quiet competence is not enough.

6. Played by Denis Lawson --
an actor from my favorite film "Local Hero" and uncle to Ewan "Obi Wan" McGregor! I thought at the time it was very interesting they had this minor character make it through all three movies. IIFC, wasn't Wedge supposed to be a boyhood friend of Luke's who used to go womprat shooting with him? I thought I remember that from the Star Wars paperback book that came out after the movie.

12. He also went to drama school with Ian McDiarmid (The Emperor).
So, is there a Scottish-Star Wars acting mafia or something?

15. No, that's Biggs Darklighter. He was mostly cut out of the movie
but he was the one who urged Luke to leave Tattooine and join up with the rebellion. Unfortunately after their brief reunion, Biggs was killed over the Death Star.

Wedge, however, is (as far as I know) the only person who flew against both Death Stars and survived.

I'm a hopeless Star Wars geek, so I have to jump in if I see something that is inaccurate (or if it seems inaccurate).

C-3PO mentions as his and R2's previous owner, while discussing the matter with Luke on Tatooine.

16. He reminds me a bit of Neville from the Harry Potter series, actually.
He is quietly in the background throughout the series, doing what needs to be done. Doing the right thing. Risking himself to do it. But he doesn't get the spotlight, because by some twist of fate someone else was the 'Chosen One'.

Although when it comes to luck, he may not have had as much as Han, but he WAS a Corellian. So he never payed much attention to the odds. :)

And is anybody else having SERIOUS problems with DU tonight? I've gotten more 'page will not load' screens than actual pages in the last few minutes.

17. Oh, and I highly recommend reading the X-Wing series of novels.
The first four focus around the re-assembling of Rogue Squadron with Wedge as the leader, and the next three feature Wedge creating a new squadron with a slightly different purpose. The way he puts it when he's trying to sell the idea is that Rogue Squadron is like a shining lightsaber, the best of the best, out there in public half for PR reasons and half for actual use. But in a back alley fight, you don't want a bright shining lightsaber. You want to sneak up behind somebody and stick a vibroblade in his back. So that's the other squadron he wants to make. :) And the last two are just kinda afterthoughts. The very last one is the only one that really has Wedge as the main character, though. The rest tell the story through someone else.

22. There were scenes in Episode IV where he was talking to Luke on Tatooine
They got cut for time purposes and because people were worried it would look like American Graffiti in space.

No special effects, no post-production sound enhancement, but it has Koo Stark, so that's something... :P

28. Always been a big Wedge fan...
since the whole X-Wing pilot-thing appealed to me a lot more than the Jedi Knight lightsaber thing.

That's also why A New Hope is my favorite movie of the lot, because of the big Death Star dogfight in the end... :)

Lucas must have been on deadline.
