What makes "German Chocolate" German?
Does the choclate come from Germany? Does it make you Sprechen Sie Deutsch? An hour after you eat it, do you want to conquer Poland? I wanna know, dammit!

2. Well, that's just entirely too sensible to be credible.
I wanna see the German Chocolate's birth certificate! It's not a natural German!

12. Something I figured out only after searching a dozen German cookbooks!
Truth to tell, I like the filling but it's not the best chocolate cake recipe.

6. Well, it was called "French Chocolate" before 1940.
"Vichy Chocolate" didn't have the same zing, so it was called "Invading Hun Horde Chocolate" for a while, but that never really caught on much.

7. I asked my wife a similar question about "Jewish Rye" bread....
what makes it Jewish?

She is Jewish, and had never heard of it....it must be made by Germans, since we live in a largely German area.

Does make great toast, though......

16. I just came across an answer to that recently
I have no clue how trustworthy the source it, but it was an interesting story: the jewish delis would use the bread that didn't sell from the delivery trucks as starter for the next sourdough batch - they'd soak the old slices in vinegar to get it going. The process wasn't legal, they weren't supposed to be recycling the old bread, but I think it's better than throwing out perfectly good food.

Whether that's true or not, I think it's the combination of the rye flour plus the rye sourdough starter that makes it a jewish rye.

8. It's ideology that dark chocolate is inferior to white chocolate.
It's also very anti-semitic for a candy.
