A question for prescription eyeglass/sunglass wearers
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 08:03 PM by nytemare
Hello folks!

I have a retinal condition called "central serous retinopathy", which means some fluid has leaked from my eye behind my retina. This is a contributing factor, but not the whole problem with light sensitivity for me. I have light eyes, and night glare when driving makes me go batty.

So, I am going to the opthamologist next week to see if I can get some glasses that will help me out. Perhaps it will help in looking at the computer all day, as well.

I hear that they have some wonderful anti-reflective, anti-glare lenses out there now. I'm wondering what others experiences have been with them.

Thanks!

1. My husband insists on them
He's extremely light sensitive and uses a computer. He gets every anti-glare, anti-reflection coating possible and it helps a lot.

I get polarized sunglasses but no coatings; I'm not super light sensitive and the coatings don't look right to me (but I've never worn them for more than to look through for a moment, so my opinion is not based on much). Polarized sunglass lenses though are great!

2. Photochromatic(transition) lenses don't work all that well as sunglasses
At least in my experience. They are certainly better than no sunglasses at all. Another problem with them is you can't get them in high index lenses (thinner, lighter). This can be a big problem if you have a strong prescription.

I always try to get the largest sized lenses I can for sunglasses. You may not look as cool, but you get better coverage out in the sun. In your case, you may even want to consider goggles, which will give you even more coverage. Naturally you're going to want polarized lenses for the best anti-glare.

I have ordered my last 3 pair of glasses from Zenni Optical and have been quite happy. They are the cheapest around (see 'made in China'), and they have some nice options. You can get prescription sunglasses goggles from them also.

4. I may end up getting sunglasses and eyeglasses.
I don't think my prescription will need to be too strong, but I surely will need something to help with glare.

Thanks for the Zenni recommendation. I have never needed glasses until now, so an experienced voice is appreciated.

:)

9. There's one catch with Zenni (or any online optical shop)
In addition to your prescription, you need to know your pupillary distance. This is the distance between your pupils. This is usually measured at the place where you buy your glasses, not the optometrist. My optometrist measured it for me on request, but I've heard that some won't/can't do it.

You can take a metric ruler and measure it yourself, but this is not a great idea. You will probably get better results if you have someone do it for you rather than standing in front of a mirror, but ideally you should have it professionally measured.

12. The eye doctor would not give me my pupillary distance, but
let me just say the good folks at Lenscrafters stepped up to the plate, and did not charge me for it.

7. I love the transition lenses
I had some a decade or so ago and they weren't great for sun glasses but my new ones are a lot better. I got them after coming out of a store into the bright sun and my eyes seized up and were tearing uncontrollably. I couldn't find my car (or any cars) in the parking lot - the change in light left me standing there completely helpless and blind for a shockingly long amount of time. The advantage of them is that as long as you have your glasses on, you won't be caught off guard and unable to function.

I wish I had a second set of regular prescription sunglasses for driving though because the transitions don't get dark when you're behind the windshield in a car.

8. I keep a set of prescription sunglasses in my car and in my flight bag
They are so cheap at Zenni optical, it's not a big deal to have multiple pairs.

5. get the cloth cleaner and fluid and learn to put them back in their case

or at least train yourself to set them on the top of the frame so you don't scratch the lenses - it won't take more than a week or so to get the habit but if you don't you will regret it quickly. The coatings and plastic lenses scratch if you breathe on them wrong

6. Sounds like a plan!
How do you like the non-reflective coatings?

11. I hate glasses, period.
Prefer extended contacts, but they (and the darn exam) aren't in the budget right now. Been wearing an old pair of badly scratched glasses for way too long! I don't remember what coatings they had and I'm sure whatever it was is long gone now.

My advice is from experience.:P

10. I see you live in FL. So do I. The poster that told you that transition lenses
may not do it for you (they don't get as dark as tinted lenses can get) and that you should get larger sized lenses (better coverage) gave you good advice for FL sunshine. The sun really is more intense this far south, compared to areas further north.

14. I can barely step outside without my shades.
I will end up getting some polarized anti-reflective lenses, and a regular pair of glasses for working on the computer.

I went by Pearle Vision, just to see what sort of styles were out there. Pricey as hell.

13. I vote for Zenni Optical as well.
I got three pairs of glasses-no line bifocals, with clip on shades for less than $220.00.

I insist on wearing prescription shades when driving in Texas.
