Controversial new doll mimics breast-feeding

It’s probably all Betsy Wetsy’s fault.

If the iconic baby-boom generation baby doll hadn’t introduced the world to the notion that dolls could have bodily functions, then maybe today we wouldn’t be talking about Bebe Gloton — the doll that that suckles 6-year-old girls.

“I just worry about what’s next,” TODAY’s Kathie Lee Gifford said after watching a video clip showing a young girl wearing a vest with daisies where her breasts would be ... if she had any.

The girl held the doll to the daisies, and the doll made suckling noises.

Now not only will women be breastfeeding in public but their kids will be breastfeeding their doll too!

because that's how my mom and aunts fed my siblings and cousins!

For exposing you to such an unnatural act so early in life.

23. She's vile
I've despised her from the first time I saw her on-air, and that was without even knowing she's a fundie.

Double yuck!

9. waoh - I don't know how I feel about this

on one hand, it's a natural function and a good one. I suppose it allows young girls to realize this is a good thing to do when they are grown, and probably healthier (if workable) than bottles in the future. OTOH - it seems designed to alarm the squeamish and Puritans of all stripes...

13. yeah i dont know either. increasingly i have been against dolls
as girls toys because it limits a girl view of her world. this is sort of part of my objection to this.

on the other hand, it is a natural function.

ugh. i hate gray areas.

14. ah, but the beauty of life is in the gray areas!

a lot of time folks get around the gender/ sex role? specificity by calling dolls action figures- that way they work for both sexes. Personally I think play is good and shouldn't be restricted too much - it's crucial to children's development - sometimes the more one tries to restrict it, the more they want to do whatever it is, instead of allowing it to be part of the cycle or phase they grow out of after that mastery/imagination period, what have you, aspect has passed. I played with some pretty girly dolls in the 60s and wound up a raging feminist, so I wouldn't worry too much! :D

My 2 year old daughter has both a favorite baby doll, and she loves to play with blocks, and dirt. We just let her do her thing.

18. This is truly sad.....
Children are no longer allowed to use their imaginations. I had one doll as a child....a couple other small toys.
I made my own paper dolls and dresses...I played outside all day and lived in the woods...I drew with sticks in our sandy driveway. Now everything is electronic, and children's imaginations are stifled...I could go on forever about this....x(

peace~

26. It's a mixed bag.
My daughter has some electronic noise makers, and she uses them from time to time. Her favorite stuff at the moment though are paintbrushes she uses as wands, and a bunch of little fuzzy balls (the kind that get sewed on to outfits) which she pretends to make into soup, or acts like they are little stars, etc. She pretends to blow bubbles, and loves when we blow the real ones. And her favorite stuffed animal is a teddy bear her Great-Grandmother made for her. I wish we could let her play outside more (apartment complex) but we are moving into family student housing at UCR, and there is a little more outside space for her. Now if it only weren't so hot during the summer...

28. It's the sort of thing a child with a new little sibling ...
... will be interested in trying.
That said, most children who are old enough to play with a doll, will have already discovered that they have nipples.

29. Blech... what's next? Girl's underpants that mimic menstruation?
Yes, breastfeeding is a natural thing to do... for grown women. If you don't have breasts yet, you don't need to learn how to breastfeed.

I'll buy that toddlers with infant siblings may be curious about breastfeeding but I serious doubt they'd want to try it themselves if the doll wasn't placed in front of them.

It's like those god-awful high heels for babies and earrings on toddlers. Let your kid be a frickin' kid for a few years. How hard can it be?
