2. Me too.
I miss the days of Sci-Fi Buzz and cranky Harlan Ellison saying Rush Limbaugh's brain has turned into bat guano.

3. So they can start watering down their programming and showing shit that isn't techincally SciFi.
That's basically it.

12. Well, considering that they now show professional wrestling...
...plus lots of non-sci-fi fantasy, would the old name even be accurate anymore?

4. I assumed it was because they couldn't copyright "SciFi".
But "SyFy" is all theirs.

16. That's the real explanation, according to some insiders
They were bugged by the fact that "sci fi" is a generic term and they couldn't stop other networks from advertising "sci fi shows". SyFy can be copyrighted and creates a perceived "difference" between their content and others.

The secondary explanation is that it will shut people up about them running wrestling and other non-scifi content on their channel. Since SciFi is short for science fiction, that name created certain programming expectations in the audience. SyFy apparently plans on rolling more non-scifi content into their lineup over the next couple of years, incuding more "reality" content.

8. because in the near future they will be showing reality shows that have nothing to do with sci-fi
in the same fashion that MTV and VH1 actually used to show music videos, but now they just show shitty reality shows

17. My understanding is that they want to move it closer to a G4 type format
There would still be lots of science fiction since the audience demographics overlap, but you'll see a lot more content aimed at 18-25 year olds, a lot more horror movies, and a lot more stupid bullshit reality shows that are fun to watch stoned (think Ninja Warrior).

10. I wonder if this would have happened if Michael Jackson was still in charge.
No, not THAT Michael Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a top TV executive in the UK, who landed a job at USA Networks, overseeing USA and SciFi. He left a few years ago, now is president of an online company.

11. Just think, it more than likely kept execs busy for at least 6 months
deciding whether to change the name and to what. It kept people employed and off the street corners. :sarcasm:
