Who else loves The Wire?
Or just David Simon in general. This is my all time favorite TV series and I'm in the process of watching the whole thing for a second time.

2. It is a good show
Though I have not yet gotten to see the last season. I really just felt it was over shadowed by The Shield.

4. I tried watching the final season of The Shield, but couldn't get into it
I saw all the other seasons on DVD and liked the show, but the last season just didn't catch me. I'll try it again sometime, though.

7. Really?
It had me riveted all the way through and consider the final episode one of the greatest of any TV show. I thought they wrapped up everything in a very satisfying way.

I have to say as well, it is my understanding that The Wire also did that... I hope soon I'll be able to watch the final season.

9. I've never watched the Shield.
I'm not usually a big fan of cops shows, but for me the Wire was different. Should I give the Shield a try?

13. It is a very different cop show
Most of the main characters are not good guys but rather bad guys. They may have flashes of goodness and may on occasion do good things but they are really bad guys (well, except for CCH Pounder)... right from episode one. The story lines raised in the very first episode have repercussions all the way through to the final episode of the last season (7 seasons). The stories are often brutal and told in an unflinching way, I thought it was wicked powerful TV. I would suggest checking out the first episode... not sure if it is available on line... I'd have to check... But if you like it, I think you will love the whole series, if it turns you off, you probably won't find anything in the rest of it to change your mind.

16. yep.
Most of the characters, and many plot points, were based on real political figures and events. David Simon worked for the the Baltimore Sun and Ed Burns within the Baltimore Police Department. They've seen it all...

Great show!

8. My favorite show of all time.
David Simon is also an excellent writer. Check out "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" if you haven't. It was the basis of the TV show and is just as good.

I'm also 75% done with "The Corner" book, which is also excellent.

Maybe even better sometimes. Watch The Wire, you'll be totally glad you did.

But I'm a big fan of the HBO shows. If it's on par with the gems they've produced it's a hell of a show.

17. I love the wire also.
Still partial to the Sopranoes, but the wire is close. I think they hurt themselves when they took Stringer Bell off the scene. Peace.

20. "The Wire" is the best television series ever made.
and according to a distant family relative that grew up in that Baltimore drug scene ... it is quite realistic.

21. I am about one millimeter behind you on that.
I just have such a warm place in my heart for West Wing. For realism I have to give it to The Wire though.

I just finished with season 1 and now I'm moving onto season 2.

22. I agree - best show ever
A tip I read on Salon.com suggested watching the first few eps with subtitles on so that you can get the drug lingo down. I didn't need um, but they were of great help to my dad. "Spider-bags.. get your spider-bags here.. Pandemic.. pandemic over here.."

Great series, great actors, and the best writing ever for a tv show. I'd say more but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

(2nd best show ever = Arrested Development) :)

27. I like your taste, my friend.
The Wire was the greatest TV drama ever made. Arrested Development was the greatest TV comedy ever made.

Homicide was pretty damn incredible too, especially considering the limitations of network TV.

26. Incredible show. Probably the best written and character developed show I've ever seen.
If you don't doubt me, check my screen name. :)

Each season was like watching a well-written novel play out on your television screen.

You never found a one-dimensional character in The Wire. Most notably this was evident in some of the characters in the projects. Most other TV shows would just have the residents of the projects be thuggish, violent and stupid. The Wire did a better job than anyone else giving a sense of humanity to these characters. Some of them were just naturally bad, others were in more shades of gray, but all of them seemed real. Take, for example, the scene where D'Angelo Barksdale uses chess as an analogy for "the game":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1HUlTKvDUI

And it goes beyond the projects. Take Season 2 for example and the dockworkers storyline. At the beginning, Ziggy Sobotka is just a screwy misfit that no one takes seriously....until he tries to make a man of himself and shoots up the Greeks' place of business.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmUQj8kCZso

What is so great about the scene is the aftermath, Ziggy just in a daze in the car, knowing the consequences of what he just did, and powerless to go anywhere.

Plus, Season 2 also features the heartbreaking scene where Ziggy's uncle, Frank Sobotka (fans of True Blood will recognize him as Detective Andy) goes to meet with the Greeks supposedly to cut a deal with them, and viewers know as he walks down the pier the inevitably tragic end to the character.

Then, of course, there is the greatest scene ever from The Wire, featuring McNulty and Bunk. It only needs one word to describe it.....FUCK......
