Its Harvest Time For My Illegal Plants (pics)
Not pot you sillies, OREGANO!

My grandmother smuggled the seeds back from her hometown in Greece decades ago -- don't know why you're not allowed to export seeds, maybe something to do with pest/weed control? -- and they've regrown on their own every year since! The only problem with harvesting them this time of year is all the damn bumblebees, but I managed to cut half of them down with the pruning sheers without getting stung, and I'll get the other half tomorrow when its cooler out in the morning.

If you've never tried homegrown oregano you don't know what you're missing! MUCH better than store-bought oregano, you can really taste the flavor. You don't need much of a garden for it either, just a small flower-bed will do like that one there next to the house. Just buy some seeds, plant them in the winter and watch them bloom!

Here's a good basic HOWTO:

2. I'm guessing it's like kudzu or Scotch brooms
Most of those restrictions are to prevent invasive species from overtaking their new habitat.

It's actually a pretty serious concern when you look at how certain plants have ecologically and financially destroyed parts of the country.

3. Yeah, I've been to the Atlanta area, seen the kudzu grows...
Its out-of-control! That stuff is everywhere!

Kind of fascinating though. Seeing entire walls along city streets blanketed with it and what not...

4. Seeds can be carriers of some plant diseases, that's why.
I think the risk is pretty low for some plants/some countries of origin but that is why it's illegal.

I have a Greek oregano in my garden and it's my favorite.
