Suspending my license???
Gah, just got a letter in the mail, my state (Massachusetts) is threatening to suspend my license because of a suspension in NH that occurred in 2006 due to nonpayment of a fine...this sucks! I believe the offense occurred back in 2003, going to pick up a bathroom vanity at a home improvement store, I got pulled over by a state trooper who noticed my tags had expired. So I got a ticket, went about my business, paid the fine by mail, and that was that. I haven't been pulled over any time since, so that has to be the incident that triggered this. Of course, I have no way of proving I paid that fine, so I wonder what I'm in for when I drive to Concord this week...grrrr.... :grr:

1. No cancelled check as proof of payment?
How did you pay the fine, NH must either have a record of payment, or they never got around to cancelling the fine after being paid. Someone there should be able to find out what is going on.

Sometimes states will notify other states that they have outstanding warrants, but forget to cancel them when satisfied leaving the other states still thinking they are still outstanding.

2. I'm hoping that's what it is
But preparing myself for a state sponsored mugging...I had a weeklong trip planned for the White Mountains in September, I'm cancelling it on Monday as I figure that money will have to go towards paying the fine/reinstatement. After years of camping and spending money in the mountains of NH, maybe I'll just stay local or camp in western MA instead...

If only I had my cancelled checks from 2003 i'd be in a better position, but I generally don't keep cancelled checks for more than 5 years...

3. Check with your bank first.
They may be able to provide you with a copy.

5. Good advice
I'll look into that, though I've changed banks since then (my orig bank got bought out a few times so I switched to credit union) but they may still have records, I have my old account information at least.

Thanks!

6. My SIL just got hit with an excise tax from MA---$700 due in fines
She paid her tax in Rockport but the clerk never entered the payments into the computer (happened to a shitload of people about 12 years ago). she just moved back from Florida and MA would not transfer her license til she paid it off.

Are you in the Haverhill area?

7. Ouch!
That's what i'm preparing myself for though; at this point I have no idea how much they're going to try to get from me, I have a feeling I'll have to drive to Concord to even find out...and Haverhill is close by, I'm in Lowell...this all happened so long ago, I only remember because I've only been pulled over a handful of times for minor things and this incident was the last time...looks like that shopping trip to North Conway ain't gonna happen this year!

8. They are merciless. If you have proof of payment, they will relent, tho.
I'm in Georgetown. We're neighbors!
