Yay! Chex cereal is now gluten-free.
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I can't believe I am so friggin happy about cereal. But I am!!!

Since I have Celiac Disease and I cannot have wheat, rye, or barley - they all have the gluten protein. I can eat corn and rice so you would think Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes would be safe but the manufacturers add Malt Flavoring so they are a big no-no.

I have been buying my cereals at specialty/health food stores and the cost is ridiculous. A 8-10oz box of rice krispie or corn flake cereal is about $4 to $5. (Plus I have to drive 30 miles to the store). Now I can go to my local grocery chain and buy Rice Chex or Corn Chex.

I just bought a 12.8oz box of Rice Chex at the grocery store one mile away for $2.86!!!!

1. I was happy, too. Crying almost. But...
then noticed the fiber content, which is close to nil. (1g per serving qualifies it as a low-fiber food.) So be sure you're getting your fiber elsewhere. Throw in some nuts, maybe. I switched to a variety of hot cereals; am currently on yellow corn grits (labeled gluten free) from Arrowhead Mills, which I got in a regular supermarket.

Some celiacs are still having trouble with GF Chex, though not as far as I can see with the rice variety: http://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=59857 But one of the problems was a couple of non-GF Chex squares being included in the GF Chex box, so that's something to look out for.

Not meaning to pour cold water on your happiness; hell, I'm still happy about it, too, even though I don't eat the stuff anymore. It's nice when a major corporation recognizes your dietary restrictions and it just feels normal to be able to buy your groceries in a regular store for a change. And of course for you not having to drive the extra 30 miles must be wonderful. So huzzah!

2. Yes - fiber has been coming from elsewhere for quite a while now. Along with
folic acid and B vitamins.

I also have Dermatitis Herpetiformis so if the Chex I ate this morning had any amount of gluten I would already be getting the blisters. I usually break out within 15 minutes of eating gluten. No problems so far. Of course I know there is always the possibility of cross contamination so I will be continue to be careful.

I just don't understand why Malt Flavoring is in so many products. Does it really add THAT much flavor? The Chex tasted just great without it.

3. Don't understand the malt flavoring thing either; was bummed out about giving up Rice Krispie treats
Making them with another puffed rice cereal just seems wrong. Moot point now as I've given up sugar, but still.
