2. My new BFF (28yo) loves her some '80s gay!
though she gets hers from the Pet Shop Boys, rather than the officially KA-approved source, Culture Club. :P

Strange to think that's "oldies" to her...

26. And in the 80s X was on how many radio stations?
About none. One in Chicago, and only at night.

The dominant music was awful. Warrant, Def Leopard, Rush, so much pop I could not stand it - Ebony and Ivory. WTF? Stevie Wonder made so many good records then he lays that turd?

Some other worthy 80s tunage, imho:

XTC, Respectable Street (live, 1981)

Jane's Addiction, Mountain Song (1988, interesting hair commercial precedes video)

The Plimsouls, Million Miles Away (1983)

loved a lot of 80's music. The Clash, X, Replacements, REM, Los Lobos, The Alarm, The Cramps, Jesus and Mary Chain, Violent Femmes, Stray Cats, Midnight Oil, Terrence Trent D'Arby( he was fucking unbelievable live too) , just to name a few ...especially The Clash ( I know, late 70's too)...in fact, except for the E Street Band, The Clash is, in my not at all humble opinion, the greatest of em all...ever...and for that matter, the greatest live R&R band ever,in my once again, not humble opinion, Bruce and da boys ( and girl, by '84) were still kicking ass in the 80's (and still are).

18. Thanks--been fortunate enough to have seen about half of those bands( actually most)
in one case literally---saw half of X ; Auntie Christ, with Exene and D.J. Also saw John Doe sing Your Cheatin Heart with Los Lobos and Dave Alvin ( holy shit, I forgot The Blasters. SHAME ON ME.....Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club too), so saw 3/4 of X. And 1/4 of the Clash: finally saw Strummer in '99. ( My #1 all time rocknroll hero, even more than Bruce in some ways). As I said, D'Arby was incredible.....saw Los Lobos 6 or 7 times, Stray Cats, The Alarm , The Cramps ( all of those also way better live than their records). I'm fighting as hard as I can to not become a musical dinosaur as I get older ( and older, and older) even though I find it's harder and harder to keep up with all the new bands . There were many 90's bands I loved too, and I was already in my 40's. I'll still love good rocknroll and soul till they strap me to my psychedelic day-glo deathbed, no matter when it was recorded.

42. Thanks back at ya---I only listed some of the 80's music I liked
Even the more "commercial" or one,2 or 3 hit wonders put out some first rate stuff. I love Cyndi Lauper and a lot of the LA bands; Scandal, Missing Persons among many others...I could really go on and on. I still think , by the way, that the mid 60's were the most intensive period of time for great artists at the peak of their creativity. From the British Invasion , to Motown and Stax/Volt, Surf music, LA and San Francisco groups, and great, great one hit wonders, I don't think that period can be beat but the 80's were definitely another period of great creativity, as was the rockabilly and doo wop era. I know a lot of people rightfully figure that the music of one's teenage years automatically get imprinted as being the best because of associated memories, but I think that's an overrated theory. For myself, I love the music of my teenage years in spite of the memories they bring, not because...And my two favorite bands of all time emerged when I was well into my 20's, and were at their peaks from the mid 70's to mid 80's....I'm glad the mention of those bands that I did mention apparently brought back good memories for you, and yeah listening to music of my teen years does bring back some good memories but only of how good the music was and still stands up 40 plus years later.I assume that's the same for you; bringing back memories of a time when some really outstanding music was on the radio , although some of the best couldn't break through the corporate monopolies yet. The Replacments ,the Cramps etc., and X being another, despite the fact that for a relatively brief time, they (X) were absolutely one of the best bands in America... And D'Arby...I thought he was poised to be a superstar but he for whatever reason , never achieved what I thought he would, but that first album is amazing and he and his band were electrifying in person...or as you put it, insanely good ( and maybe a little insane from what I've heard, but that's true for many highly creative people). As I said I'm trying to resist becoming a musical dinosaur, although it's not easy at my age ; I am really having trouble with the concept and reality of being 58--for god's sake, that's an old man, and I'm still politically radical ( in some ways anyway) and still love to rock ( even though I don't have the physical ability to dance all night long nor to do a show with the same jumping around on stage I used to...) Well, its past 3 AM ,and I'm wide awake, my body still think it's supposed to keep rock and roll hours...But I start rambling this time of night; that's when I did all my best songwriting, between midnight and 6 AM...and the words still come pouring out even if they don't make as much sense as they used to ( " as we get older, and stop making sense"). :hi: from your DU geezer friend, abq e streeter

45. I enjoyed this abq!
I went to bed shortly after my post, but I hear you - I have the night owl gene too! I am an inactive poet that once wrote amazing stuff in the wee hours. Could happen again I suppose. :-)

It's funny, I'm not hung up on all 80s music - some was drivel - but there were some amazing gems in there if you were really paying attention. Which is why your first post caught my eye! I agree about X, by the way. I can remember hearing them for the first time on local college radio and being mesmerized.

I have a soft spot for a lot of 60s and 70s stuff myself...it was my "childhood" music and strangely comforting to me to this day. I was a lucky child; I had very musically adventurous parents who taught me to really listen to music and try to understand the meaning behind it. I, too, listen to most music with an open mind, though some days it is harder with some of the corporate pop crap that seems to be everywhere.

I look forward to more of your musical "ramblings" because they make a hell of a lot of sense. :-)

24. Oh, the irony
If you listen to a lot of younger bands today, you hear the influence of the 1980s underground. Interpol rips off New Order and Echo, Snow Patrol pillages "Joshua Tree" era U2, Arctic Monkeys clearly liked their older brother's Jam albums, and The Killers reference pretty much everyone on the radio circa 1986.
