Yeah, I have to admit, I think less of him because of it.

I'm not saying he has to date that other famous 48year old, Susan Boyle, but I'm disappointed that he doesn't date women in his own age ballpark. That's all I'm saying.

1. I'm curious, and no snark at all intended...
Why would you think less of him? I don't care who he dates, as long as she is legal.

Whether he dates someone who is 20 or 90...it's his life.

31. It's the pattern. If he occasionally did so, while dating other age groups, I wouldn't
bat an eye. But consistently doing so just kind of suggests control issues, etc.

Especially for a guy that is marketed as kind of a thinking kind of guy who is the sensitive type. It just seems out of character.

Jerry Seinfeld was gross in dating teenagers.

36. He likes to date younger women.
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 01:27 PM by LeftyFingerPop
Maybe he likes to date younger women, who are brunette, 5'4", size 6, 120 and over IQ.

That is his choice. He can have any pattern he wants.

Just as any woman can date whomever she wants.

2. He's always struck me as the superficial type.
Never been a huge George Clooney fan despite the fact he has the classic cinematic look.

Age per se age shouldn't matter. However, when someone specifically seeks romance within an age group vastly different from their own, they ARE esssentially making age a factor. A prerequisite that someone be younger and attractive is self-limiting.

But who is to say, sometimes things are not as they appear. I certainly don't know about the man's motivations (nor do I care to).

6. Despite the almost 20 year age difference
A 30 year old is *generally* more mature than someone 5 or 10 years younger. Didn't Jerry Seinfeld have a 16 or 17 year old gf when he hit 40? That's just yucky...

9. I'm probably not going to be real popular for this...
but my roommate is a line producer here in NYC and I have met my share of famous and semi-famous people, more TV than film actors. Few people in the industry, male or female, don't date dramatically-younger if they can get away with it. People dating close to their own age-range is so rare that it turns heads...in a very bad way. (roommate asked me to add "...in a very bad way.")

I don't really think it's fair to single out George Clooney for something that is nearly universal within that social cadre. It's a filthy industry; the PAs are all trying to f%&k a star or starlet because it's the fast-track to career success, the stars are all trying to f%&k a hot 20-year old because they can.

Be glad you don't have to see it. It's a lot like sausage, if you ever saw the process you wouldn't want to partake of the product ever again.

42. Your public image isn't one of a 'thinking' 'thoughtful' 'sensitive' person when it comes to
everything but women, I guess. That's kind of how it looks. Again, if his dating habits weren't focused exclusively on women he's old enough to be their father, then I wouldn't think twice about him going younger occasionally. Not at all.

Many years of happiness to you!

16. Yeah, I think a little less of him, too
Especially given his politics. I like to think that liberals are inclusive - that we've never adopted the Stepford model, much less moved past it. I agree that it's not unique to George Cloonely, but he seems intellectual and liberal and so, yes, I think we expect more from him.

If that picture is his current girlfriend, boo on you for posting it. How can we possibly determine the intellectual and emotional worth of a person by looking at a picture? What are her politics? What books does she like? What's her life story?

Never mind that the comparison ends there - you didn't see either of them with a new piece of eye candy twice a year, and both relationships endured (even though Henry cheated on Eleanor) - but apparently the poster thinks it's an apt analogy.

61. the photo seems appropriate
since he explains (according to the article) that he was smitten with her "beauty" - not her intellect, emotions, politics, or life story.

I suspect we wouldn't have quite the same OP if he'd met her working at a political event or some other intellectual pursuit. "I was smitten by her beauty" is a pretty shallow summary of why you are in a relationship with a person, and I think less of him because of that. It's one thing to have that attraction in addition to the things that matter. It's another to boil it down to that, to reduce a woman to eye candy.

18. He's dating who he wants to... you want him to NOT do so for appearances sake?
Would you really he rather make some calculated decision to date a woman who is 40 or 45 or so because it would be more appropriate in your eyes? How would that feel to be her?

Fine, so say he starts dating Jennifer Aniston (40)... then you complain that he's dating a beautiful movie star, or that he's dating a "skinny b****" or some other complaint.

Also, I don't see anyone around here complaining about Dennis Kucinich (62) having a beautiful 31 year old wife... maybe I should think less of him now.

30. Well, I'm sure it's 90% recreational at least...
I'm sure he'd admit that he's dating her because she's beautiful and sexy and probably fun to be with outside the bedroom too, and I'm sure she's aware that it's probably casual and impermanent. I'm sure she'll have her fun, too, along the way.

Maybe she does have high ideals and can hold her own in a conversation on current events, but if she does or doesn't, how does that matter, especially if they're "just dating" ?

Perhaps as important is that she's from that same "world" of entertainment, where constant travel and parties and schmoozing and being fake-intimate with near strangers is part of the job. Most "regular" guys would have a tough time dating a model, as they'd get jealous about the travel, or wonder if photographers or male models and such were hitting on them, or hate having their girlfriend half-naked (or naked) in a magazine or on a website for all the world to see. A guy like Clooney can deal with all that, knowing it's part of the biz, and appreciates that SHE probably won't get weird or jealous if he has a romantic scene in a movie, or when he needs to travel and all that.

He's the guy one has fun with and then leaves behind to go on, informed, to the life one wants, married or not. I've always been attracted to older men - I suppose you'd think less of me for that.

As far as anyone can tell, he's not a liar. He doesn't tell these women they're his One and Only and promise marriage and happily-ever-after and then leave them cold and alone. He's said numerous times he's not the marrying sort - I'm quite sure his female companions are aware of that and are fine with having a good time while it lasts. Who the hell are you to judge any of them? And what's more offensive is that you do so under the pretense of being "liberal" and "enlightened." Enlightened liberals don't sit in judgment of other people's personal choices when there is no evidence that those choices are hurting anyone.

I doubt it, and that's called hypocrisy. There are plenty of things to dislike about Fred Thompson without being sanctimonious about his personal choices that don't affect anyone else.

I don't count cheating or lying in that category - if George Clooney was out there treating women like shit, I'd be right up there with the OP judging him. But as far as anyone can tell, he doesn't - he's simply made his preferences clear, and his girlfriends must be aware of that. If everyone is on the same page and no one's getting misled or hurt, who is anyone to "disapprove"?

doesn't want kids, and I would bet that anyone he dates knows it's for fun with NO future. I don't think any less of him at all. I think he's truly a good guy and just doesn't want attachments. I've seen him interviewed and I'm glad he's on our side. I also think he's a very good actor - Michael Clayton is one of my favorites.

54. Who gives a flying fuck?
FWIW, I haven't dated somebody within a decade of my own age in my adult life. Feel free to think less of me too if you want, or is that sort of judgment reserved for men on the theory that the women in their relationships are somehow victims of their behavior?

58. who cares?
A 30-year-old is not a child or a "barely-legal" naif. Neither is a 29-year-old. Age differences mean less as you get older. If he were 58 and she were 40 (same span, note) no busybody would even bother.

65. I don't think it's any of my business one way or the other
If he committed a crime or something, then it would matter. However who he dates or marries is really not my business, nor does it change my opinion of him (although to be honest he is just an actor to me so I really don't give him much thought or care all that much about him)

Everyone has their own tastes in mates. Age difference relationships are no different than wanting a particular type of person or someone with certain characteristics. Heck I should be so lucky that a beautiful 30-something would want to be with me.
