Is anyone going to Burning Man this year or go last year?
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 02:09 PM by MissMarple
My college age son is going with a couple of friends. I was REALLY worried until I did some research. Actually the Halcyon guy in the pink fur was reassuring and had practical information, and the video of the two chefs from San Francisco was helpful. The alternative energy site was informative, as was the Burning Man site itself. And the kids have done quite a bit of research and seem to want to be prepared. They won't be with a community, just three vehicles and some kids.

I would never think of telling him not to go, of course. But still...I worry.

Hearing any DUer's personal experience would be helpful...I hope.

1. I've gone three times, but not this year
If your son is prepared, there is not much to worry about.

First and foremost is the harsh environment: bring plenty of food and water, have a strong sun/wind shelter, and bring comfy shoes, dust masks (or bandannas) and goggles. I've found it's good to have a low-key buddy system - your buddy reminds you to drink water and to not do stupid things.

Also, there is a large community of freaks of every color and shape - there are old hippies, a large and welcome LGBTQ community, families with kids, young ravers, metal/industrial types, goths, punks, disco dancers, people from all over the world, artists, etc. Surprisingly all of these "tribes" tend to get along fairly well, although most of the alternative types get annoyed with the drunken frat biy types who tend to show up on Friday to look at boobies, litter, and get drunk. But still, everyone gets along fairly well.

It's not the druggy haven its critics (and some fans) say it is. There are drugs, but most people are pretty responsible. There ARE cops there, contrary to some people's wishful thinking, so if someone is going to smoke some pot, do it in a private area not out in public, and don't buy weed from strangers. People get busted there all the time because of a false sense of security I think.

If he's interested, I'd be glad to share some tips with him. Let him know, and have him PM me if you want.

2. Thank you. I'll let him know.
He is a sensisble, low key kind of kid. He gets along with all kinds of people, except for maybe the drunken frat boy types. His school attracts outdoor loving, laid back kids. I just don't want him to get there a go 'Whoops, I really should have brought that'.

He has a three man tent and he is trying to figure out how to erect a shade structure.

3. So....a little bump for the evening crowd. I need some support here, guys. Seriously.
Or, I'm going to break out in hives.

4. Have you read these pages...

My friends go to it every year and always have a good time. I've never gone myself. I think sunburn and dehydration are the main risks. Bring lots of sunscreen and a hat, and lots and lots and lots of water.

5. Thanks. I have, and he has. I just need reassurance.

Knowing that people I have somewhat of a connection with helps. Starting when he was 14 I drove him all over Colorado, into Utah and New Mexico to do down hill bike racing. There were heart wrenching moments. Now he does other stuff, but I can't follow. He is growing/grown up. I am so proud of him. Thanks.

Additionally, I love your sig line. My sentiments exactly.

6. I think he will have a grand time.
With all that travel it sounds like he is pretty world-wise. I know it's probably impossible not to worry though.
