So there I was going off to buy a new cheap car...

a Versa, in fact. My car, according to the cash for clunkers deal one month ago, was eligible for the rebate. Now, one month later, I go on the governments web site and Poof! no longer eligible!!!

last month it had a combined mpg of 18, now magically, it's 19!

I wrote a letter but I know fully well it won't do shit.

now I'm stuck with a almost 14 year old car on it's last legs and unable to afford a new one with out that rebate.

I'm fucked.

It's just so frustrating being on the bottom of the barrel all the fucking time.

7. Update: I got a reply to my email.

And as you stated, they did "revalue" the estimates.

So I shot back a reply basically saying, because I didn't act fast enough I'm penalized.

I ended with a snarky remark about there being two classes in this nation: the have mores and the have even mores, the rest of us don't count. Probably not the brightest thing to do, but I am pissed.

Meh, they probably have a file on me anyway, one more won't make a big difference.

just makes my blood boil.

3. Well, I don't know, it was 21 via the dealer way back when...then

last month it was 18 when the "actual" numbers came out, and that qualified for the clunkers program, now it's at 19.

so you tell me?

how many mpg are you getting? I'm not asking what it is on paper. What do you actually get?

I have an old car that's ineligible because it gets good gas mileage. But I understand that it doesn't qualify.

5. Well, since I'm living very light these days, I'm basically hypermiling.

I drive really slow and try not to brake often if I can help it. I was getting almost 30 miles to the gallon, but the issue is not gas mileage.

It's the jeep itself. The clutch is going.

The little money I have that was going to go on top of the 4500 buck rebate, now it will go to fix the clutch. :( Given the cars age, there will be many more repairs in the near future.

6. The CARS web site says my '92 S10 might qualify.

Except I've been lucky and had the money to keep the truck running as good as a '92 can run -- for example, put in a new radiator, did a pretty complete engine overhaul last year. The CARS web site says the factory mpg for the truck is 17 and I'm getting closer to 25.

The irony of that just astounds me.
