M A D M E N - - Alright, who wached last night?
And do you think Don Draper was sending a message to Sal with the "Lower your exposure" line?

1. absolutely
the message was both "I've forgotten about it" and "be careful"

2. That's the way I read it
Draper is a man who understands secrets...

4. Don is always sympathetic to people with secrets and underdogs.
When Roger announced another firm had hired a Negro copywriter, his only comment was "I wouldn't want to be in his place." They have his character understand everyone's point of view except his own. Not just a good salesman, but literally a self-made man.

6. exactly -- it was a masterful line
Limit Your Exposure: he warned Sal about the responses others might have and put Sal at ease about his own response, avoiding all the awkward tension and awkward intimacy that either talking about it or ignoring it would have required. And he nailed the London Fog account. Pretty impressive for three words :)

3. Usually when Don's giving advice, he's really talking about himself
To the cigarette guys: "This is the greatest advertisting opportunity since the invention of cereal. We have six identical companies making six identical products. We can say anything we want."

To everybody: "Move forward"

To Peggy: "You'll be surprised at how fast this becomes unimportant"

To his daughter: "Crush the cherry at the bottom of the glass, Sally, and then pour the bourbon in slowly" (Okay, maybe that one isn't so profound)

So his "Lower your exposure" to Sal is part of a long tradition of Mad Men saying two things with one sentence.
