Did you ever talk a police officer out of writing a ticket?
If so, how did you do it?

1. Many times, but I not going into detail.
But it helps a lot if you are blonde and good-looking. That was in my younger years. Can't get away with it now in my senior years.

2. Actually, I think Ronnie James Dio did that.
My bumper sticker says, "Dio is My Copilot" and a week or so ago I was stopped for doing a wee bit over the speed limit. The cop commented on the sticker and asked me if Dio was going to pay half of the ticket. He started laughing and said he was a Dio fan too. I got off with a warning! He even flashed me the horns when he got back on his motorcycle! How cool is that?

That was the closest call I ever had to getting a speeding ticket.

3. No, but I've been lucky a few times
Once, there was a big traffic jam and a bunch of people went into the breakdown lane to exit early and a cop pulled over a whole lot of people - at least a dozen cars in a row. However, after a couple of cars, he started walking back to each one of us and announced that we were lucky because he had run out of tickets!

32. I've seen that happen a few times.
If I'm in a bad mood, I usually try to "ride the white line" and block people from passing me in the breakdown lane.

Just cause it's illegal to do that. And I like to be a jackass sometimes.

4. Yes, once. And I recently talked the border folks at 1000 Islands out of a search.
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 07:01 AM by Captain Hilts
In the first case my car was getting its first drive after a carbeurator repair and the engine was running oddly.

In the second, they punched up my numbers - evidently the US and Canada are sharing info on this stuff now - and they said, "you're right, we don't need to search you, have a nice day." I had told them that they "randomly" picked the PERFECT person for the 'garage search' as I had a lot of experience with it and knew exactly what to do.

9. Yes
Many years ago, I had a part time job at the Paramus Park Mall. One night, I decided to take the back roads home, which would involve going down this one road that had a 25MPH speed limit for around 5 miles but... it was a straight shot almost to where I lived. I was pulled over doing about 80 and as the cop was coming up to my car, I had a flash of brilliance. I rolled down the window and said "Thank God you put you lights on and pulled me over, I had fallen asleep and could have killed myself!" (it was about 1:30am). The cop looked a little surprised but still asked for my license, registration and insurance, which I gave him. He ran my stuff, came back and asked where I was going. I explained I was just coming off my third job and was going home for a few hours sleep before I had to go to one of my other jobs. He let me off with a warning :D

10. A lot of times.
Just being honest helps. As soon as you say "Oh, no officer, I couldn't have been,..." it is over.

One time I just said, "You know sir, that's exactly what my speedometer was reading when I spotted your car." I got a warning.

Another time, I was at the end of a line of cars. I said, "I can see how you might have clocked me at (whatever), but I've been behind that same line of cars since the traffic light five miles back. It isn't like I was going to get home any quicker by speeding and on balance we were barely at the limit." I got a warning.

Though I think I may be losing my touch. Got a speeding ticket last year I couldn't talk my way out of. Oh, and one with a woman police officer who refused to admit I was right, but later the ticket was voided.

15. just told him the truth
about 25 years ago my wife was in icu and things were not going well.

The doctors told me i had better get my ass down there. I had been there for a while that night
and things started happening after i left.

the cop apparently confirmed enough of the story with the hospital and sent me on my way telling me to be really careful so i did not end up in a hospital too.

she lived for a couple years after that.

17. Pure panic
I blew threw a radar zone doing 100 mph in a 60 'cause a pickup truck was chasing me - no idea why.

Once I stopped hyperventilating the cop took down my ID and let me go. They never did catch the pickup.

20. Twice. 1.. I had my only new car & got going too fast down a hill . I
apologized, said it was the only time I had a new car & got carried away. 2. I was rushing to see James Burke (Discovery--Connections) speak at my University, & the cop was a fan. I have nothing bad to say about the State Police, contrary to my opinions about the locals & sheriffs.

23. I turned from the wrong lane, because the correct lane was obstructed
I was making a right turn, and there was a truck parked a few feet from the stop line, the officer went back and looked and ticketed the illegally parked truck instead.

24. I ran a stop sign, was speeding, and my truck rolled down a hill and hit his.
And they let me go home, no ticket.

I live out in the middle of nowhere kind of rural country, the cops were from the small town of about 10,000 that's six miles away from me.

I was freaking out because I had a lot, a lot of work to do, had not slept, went to the convenience store for some Monsters and 5-hour energy drinks and some cigarettes. He asked me if I was doing drugs and I showed him the caffeine I had.

I guess they ended up feeling sorry for me, didn't even charge me for the cracked frame on the front of the cop car.

25. Yep.
1974.
I had a sports car, mini skirt, great legs, and made a turn without signaling.
The cop took his own sweet time looking over the front seat of the car.

He asked me out a week later, then I told him my boyfriend was a fellow officer on the force.
He changed his mind.

those were the days.

26. I thought I was going to jail, but I wound up getting out of a ticket
I was rolling down the interstate a few years back and I had my cruise control set exactly to the speed limit and it had been so for the last 50 miles or so. The next thing I know a blue sedan pulled up next to me and was trying to wave me over. Inside was a portly man with some type of official looking uniform. It was apparently an unmarked police car. I briefly considered not pulling over until someone showed up with a real police car, but I decided to go ahead and stop.

The cop was from some local town and he was quite pissed off because apparently he had been trying to pull me over for a while and I hadn't noticed. He asked me if I knew why I had gotten pulled over. I asked if I had a low tire or a brakelight out or something because he had no idea. He immediately flew into a rage because he apparently thought I was fucking with him. He said he clocked me at 80 something (I don't remember exactly). Then he went back to trying to get me to admit to speeding (which I sure as hell wasn't going to do). Things escalated and before I knew it we were yelling at each other. Then he told me to step back to his car. I told him I wasn't going to do it because my daughter was in the back seat and I wasn't going to leave her alone. He went back to his car and came back with a warning citation(much to my surprise).

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a cop and he said it's pretty common that municipal cops are given radar guns with no training on how to use them. He said they are pretty easy to use, but if a reflector like a road sign is near the path of the beam, you can get reflections which often produce erroneous readings. I suspect that's what happened.

A few days later I called the chief of police in this town and complained about the officer. He asked me if I wanted to come in and file a formal complaint, which I didn't because I wasn't about to drive 200 miles just to do so. I got the impression that they had gotten complaints about him before and wanted something in writing that they could use to take action against him.

Well, of COURSE Bertha would find a way to get cats into this thread. But it's true.

We were driving through Oklahoma when I got pulled over by a state trooper named Carter. Trooper Carter put his big ol' face in my window and drawled, "you's makin' 83 mile an hour." I think the combination of two women crying, my hands shaking, and two cats yowling in the back seat made him decide to give me a warning. Let's hear it for Harry & Richard.

30. Not me, but a model of mine did recently...
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 09:23 AM by gmoney
When I have a session with a nude figure model, I request that they wear a slip dress and no undies so they don't have lines on their skin from tight clothing. (This saves time either waiting for the lines to fade after disrobing, or time retouching, which I prefer not to do.)

So a few weeks ago, a model friend of mine was driving down for a shoot and was running a bit late, so she was speeding and got pulled over. Somehow, she took her seat belt off to reach for her license in her purse, but in removing the seat belt, managed to push her dress away from her breast, but she didn't notice.

The cop approached the car and looked in and got a clear view of her bare breast and made some sort of comment about it. She covered up, and somehow he steered the conversation to the fact that she does nude figure modeling, and basically agreed to let her off with a warning if she showed him her breast again. I think he asked for her portfolio website, too. Not wanting a pricey ticket, she flashed him, gave him the link, and he let her go.

Afterward, she was pretty angry about the situation and felt cheapened by the whole thing. Said she even had bad dreams about it that night.

It's all about context... if you met her anywhere else, she'd be happy to share her website with you, and would probably flash you as a joke. But the situation with a cop was just creepy and wrong.

34. I was about 17-years-old
Late at night and cold and my van wasn't warmed up. So it would stall when I came to a complete stop.
I blew through 3 stops signs in a row and a state trooper saw it and busted me.She pulled me over and declared that she was going to write me a ticket for all three stops.

She asked me for my information and I handed it to her while I picked up the day's newspaper to read while waiting for my info. to come back.

I don't know if it was because I was polite,or reading the paper this young of age...or my hearing aids..

...she came back up, warned me, and let me go.

36. Several times
My best was when I got stopped by the same cop for the same offenses (doubling the speed limit, crossing the double yellow - I was young and stupid and had a motorcycle...what can I say?) a week apart and never got a ticket. He did assure me that if he stopped me again he'd find a reason to put me in jail.

37. it wasn't intentional, but i got out of one by crying
i was stopped behind a school bus at a red light and the bus driver thought it would be a brilliant idea to back up. traffic was stacked up behind me and all i could do was blow my horn and hope for as little damage as possible.

he crunched the front end of my car, we pull into a parking lot and call the police. when the officer asked for my license and insurance, he saw that my insurance card had expired and told me he was going to write me a ticket. now, i was only 19 or 20 and had just had the front end of my car crunched by some moron, so i burst into tears.

the officer got really freaked out by that and told me to just bring a copy of a current insurance card to the station by the end of the next day.

luckily, the damage to my car was only cosmetic and neither my bf or i were hurt. that is one of the many reasons i love volvos. had we been in his geo storm, i have a feeling the damage would have been much, much worse.
