A woman from down the street was walking two dogs

A Pomeranian on a leash and a black mutt roaming free. As they passed my yard, the mutt squatted on my lawn and squeezed out a pile. The woman glanced quickly at the house, then said "don't do that," to the dog. But the deed was done already. Then she and the two dogs kept walking.

I had just gotten out of the shower and wasn't dressed for a confrontation, but through the window I saw and heard the whole transaction, even though they couldn't see me.


Question: if I scoop up the dog's shit and dump it on their lawn, am I guilty of some legal infraction? Surely I have the weight of moral authority on my side, right?

If so, I would dump the poop in the trash and report her for breaking the leash law.

We're in a city, and I believe that we do have leash laws, but I've never seen this particular dog on a leash.

Tonight is trash pick-up night, so I've already deposited the offending load in the garbage.


I do sort of plan to confront her about it. My kids are smart enough not to pick up shit from the yard, but they both run around barefoot a good deal of the time, and I'm not yet ready to have them experience that squish-between-the-toes sensation.

stating that the dog must be "under the owners control" which can mean that a dog the follows the owners commands is ok. of course, if something bad happens you get cited because obviously when the bad thing happened, it was not under control.

She'll get the message.

I used to walk my lab on a leash and we would often pick up tag alongs. Even now when I go to the mailbox the standard poodle (a beautiful dog) across the street promptly jumps his fence and follows me home. He doesnt get close enough to be touched, he just likes to follow. Someone watching me might think that was my dog following me.

The woman lives about three houses down the block from me, and so does the dog.

The Pomeranian is a guest, however.

It makes those of us who always clean up after our dogs look bad.

However (and I am certainly not saying this about you!) I think it's valid to leave dog poop in the yards of people in my neighborhood who let their cats spend the day in my yard and poop where there are flowers. I don't do this, but I've been sorely tempted.

If so, she ought to be prepared to do so. If not you may want to tell her you expect her to pick up after her dog if he/she uses your lawn again.

I finally went out and asked her to please pick up after her dog. I then found out she was the grandmother of my daughter's best friend and was dying of cancer. I know this does not give her an excuse, but I still feel bad.

They also attack our dogs in our yard. The owners are not my favorite people and I have thought long and hard about how to handle them. If I could do what I'm thinking there would be a stinking fiery bag of dog poop on their porch everyday.

Since I'm not doing what I'd like I just pick up the poop and think resentful thoughts toward the lazy owners. :)

Or maybe, "Hey neighbor, you accidentally dropped this in my yard this morning." But really, that's only if you leave it in her mailbox.

Seriously, if it does, the next time you see her, you could politely point out that she should be cleaning up after her dogs and that there's a leash law.

If it doesn't, I would recommend getting ahold of yourself and just letting it go. Why does everything have to be a federal case these days?

So her dog pooped on your lawn. Maybe she didn't have a baggie with her, maybe the dog had already gone and she didn't expect it to go again, maybe she is just a rude dog owner. In any event, is it really that big a deal to go out and clean some poop off your lawn?

But if I have to clean somebody else's dog's shit out from between the toes of my unsuspecting 2.5 year old, then I'll be more than tempted to take a dump on their porch myself.

What if the OP were disabled or elderly, for example, and had a pile of dog crap to clean up now because this woman was too selfish to clean it up herself?

There are lots of nasty intestinal parasites that dogs carry that can be transmitted not only to other dogs, but to kids as well, so it's not just an issue of beeing a good neighbor, but a public health issue as well. My dog is an avid shit eater, and, because of this, I have to worm her regularly. I am super careful when walking her to try to prevent her from eating poo, but she is feindishly quick about gobbling up other dogs glistening morsels that are left out by their lazy piece of shit owners. My dog is a 70 lb pit bull, so when she cops a squat, it's no tootsie roll, it's generally a large steaming log pile that'll fill a doggie doo bags if she's gotten into some poo the day before, but I make sure to clean up each and every time we are out of the house (always on leash).

I had a neighbor who would walk her dogs twice a day, letting them crap all over the yards in the neighborhood. Even worse, they apparently had acid piss, because the grass died wherever they urinated. I finally went out and confronted her one day as one of her pups was laying a pile in my front yard. She acted like I was some kind of loon for complaining about "dogs simply doing what dogs do." When I asked her why she didn't let them crap in her yard, she just looked at me and said, "Because I'd have to clean it up...at least we're out in public here, where it doesn't hurt anyone." :wow:

Since my then-toddler daughter had a wandering habit anyway, I just ended up building a picket fence around the yard. About a year later one of my neighbors bought a Bull Mastiff, and made a point to walk the dog to HER front yard every evening for a nice healthy crap. After a couple of humorous screaming matches, she finally took the hint and kept the dog crap off the neighborhood lawns.

that after having her dogs crap on everyone else's laws for years, she would complain about anyone's dog crapping on her lawn.

I'm surprised that the whole neighborhood didn't turn her lawn into the official crapping station for all dogs.
