Guitar solos. Good or bad?
I come down on the bad side. Some are great (Hendrix at Woodstock) but most of the time it just seems like such a waste of time. Remember that guy on Saturday Night Live band who used to make those stupid faces every commercial break? (GE Smith according to wikipedia) God, I wanted to be able to punch him in his mouth. Just play the damn song already.

4. It depends on the soloist: Like Ernie Isley!

6. They can be brilliant, be wankery, or be something in between or even both.
Good guitar solos are good. Bad solos are bad.

7. Mostly bad.
I don't mind short licks as fills, but actual solos are usually boring to me, and come across as self-indulgent wankery. And any guitarist wearing a puffy shirt is guaranteed to be a wanker.

having said that, there are guitarists, and certain styles of music, that pull it off to mostly good effect.

8. You can't make funny faces if you're playing with a spoon in your mouth

9. A guitar solo can be a true art form
but like all art, genius is rare.

David Gilmore of Pink Floyd is my favourite.
Peter Frampton is a close second.
I never really got into Hendrix 'cause he was more into effects than melody.

10. It depends upon the player, the notes they play, and the space they leave around those notes.
