Name someone who's supposed to funny, but just isn't funny
For example, you might write "Andy Samberg" or "Robin Williams".

28. He put his message before his comedy.
Even George Carlin was weakest when he did that. There is an art to comedy beyond the basic message. A singer can sing perfectly meaningful lyrics and still suck at singing them. A comedian can make smart observations and still suck at comedy.

The only people who didn't like him just couldn't understand him. Dane Cook has nowhere near that kind of respect.

56. The only people who like him are people who claim that everyone else doesn't understand him
To keep that from being a circular argument, you need to present someone who does get Kaufman and still doesn't find him funny.

Incidentally, I "get" Kaufman, but since I am the person with whom you are currently discussing the matter, then of course I can't be offered up as an example!

However, I'm glad to see that we agree re: Cook.

30. Sam Kinnison is one of the names I'm wanting to write.
Sexist and loud. Comedians like Andrew Dice Clay or Larry the Cable Guy pretend to be a caricature to make people laugh at the caricature more than the jokes. The angry, sexist, bigotry of the jokes is meant to mock the character they are assuming, to mock people who hold those views, even sometimes to mock the audience by making them aware of their own preconceptions. But I never got the impression Kinnison was doing that. He just seemed to think his comments were funny instead of sexist. Never liked him

Still a tragic end. :(

47. Jimmy Fallon
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 10:20 PM by Rob H.
has to be one of the most unfunny people in America. He was this close to disappearing forever, and then some dumbass NBC executive said, "Hey, you know what this network needs? A cringe-inducingly-bad late night talk show, and I mean a show hosted by somebody who sucks so hard that he actually makes Jay Leno look like a goddamned comic genius! Hey, I hear Jimmy Fallon still isn't doing anything worthwhile with his life and we could probably get him cheap--he's perfect!" and gave him a late night talk show gig.

:wtf:

132. I think the NBC suits just remembered Conan O'Brien's first show...
...I remember it clearly, and his first guest, John Goodman. It was cringe-inducing, embarrassing, what can I say. But "executives" can never let go of that "lightning can strike twice" mentality, and will always back a long shot if they have won with that strategy in the past. Fallon sucks...so did Conan on day one (and some people think Conan STILL sucks)...

...it's a viable alternative to actually giving someone with talent their own late night show.

96. Conan is hilarious in skits and when he goes off script. He just sucks at monologue one-liners.
It's like they were too afraid to lay-off Leno's tired joke-writers and Conan is stuck there for 10 minutes delivering these lame, stale jokes. You can tell he's not a fan of that--at Late Night he only told 4 or 5 monologue jokes before going into his skit portion. For whatever reason, when he moved to the Tonight Show they saddled him with doing the extended monologue, and that just isn't what he's good at.

But I love his little ad libs between jokes, and when it comes to skits, nobody at late night is funnier. Especially when he goes on little assignments for himself. I will say, however, my least favorite skit of his is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog--just overrated in my opinion.

But despite his lackluster monologues, I will say him moving to 11:30 has gotten me back watching late night comedy.

113. Agree totally.
For example, his birdwatching and boy band ad-lib sketches on Late Night were drool-rolling-down-your-chin, heartburn-inducing funny. But when it came to the jokes, half the time they fell flat, after which time he would joke for about a minute about how lame the previous joke was.
