stood more than 7 1/2-feet tall, but never had any reported run-ins with people.
In a separate case, a fatal shooting of another grizzly on the Rocky Mountain Front has been ruled self-defense.
The decaying carcass of the huge bear formally known as No. 4273, and informally referred to as "Maxiumus,"
was discovered Aug. 12 by a rancher cutting hay along Fish Creek off of Swift Dam Road west of Dupuyer,
said Mike Madel, a grizzly bear management specialist for Fish, Wildlife & Parks.
"Someone just indiscriminately shot the bear," Madel said.
The pad of the second-largest grizzly bear ever captured in Montana measured
7-1/8 inches across with 3-1/2 inch claws.
