Poll question: Melee weapon of choice?
If you were in a situation where you had to hack/bash your way out, what implement of destruction would you prefer?

1. Sword, one handed
I want to say axe, but I wouldn't last that long swinging it around. I got an double headed axe and it weighs roughly 40lbs, I would only have good/prime stamina for probably a minute of melee, and then I'd tire and get hacked to pieces by the Goblin horde.

So, to conserve energy, and keep up my stamina, I'd take a one handed sword.

43. FORTY POUNDS?! You got majorly conned on that double-headed axe.
PLEASE tell me you didn't pay a lot for it. (Or that you made a typo on that weight.)

Because that's way too heavy. Even assuming it's one of those fantasy-style pieces with a pair of huge axeheads mounted opposite each other, I've seen examples of those weigh in at FOUR pounds or so. Case in point: http://www.casiberia.com/product_details.asp?id=XH1074

Even if you pulled the haft and replaced it with a longer one, it still shouldn't get over six pounds. And mind you, that's still talking about fantasy pieces.

The few historical double axes I've ever seen that look to be intended for combat -- from Germany, dated to about 200-600 AD -- have much smaller axeheads. I have photos that I can dig up and get hosted. Hell, I don't think Greek/Anatolian labrys axes were that size, and those were purely ceremonial.

25. Warhammer.
I own two. I have one that I bought that is pretty but probably useless.

I also have one I made myself, more of a combat-ready general purpose two-hander mallet. It's got a head on it made from a 7" 6-lbs. round of fire-hardened ash, banded with iron straps and a handle I took from a fiberglass shovel...it's not pretty but based on what it does to wooden railroad ties (drives them into the ground 6"/swing) and cantaloupes (liquification) I can only imagine what it would do to a head. I can only wield it for a good 15 minutes before I need to take a breather, but oh what a fun 15 they are.

So, no, a firearm doesn't qualify, even if it's only shooting beanbags.

36. Heavy boots.
Once somebody's knee is bent the wrong way, one can take their time on the rest of them. And nobody thinks of them as a weapon, so you can wear them pretty much anywhere.

Also, getting your shit stomped into a bloody ruin by a tiny woman who looks like she should teach kindergarten or something just adds insult to injury.

39. I'm generally a sword fan myself...
but since they're hard to carry around nowadays, I'd prefer to depend on my fists and feet in a real life situation. Light armored bracers make for a good defensive/offensive weapon for those who know how to use them, and they wouldn't get in the way for the most part. An properly executed upward block to the chin is just as effective at knocking somebody out cold as an uppercut. Especially when you've got a layer of steel or heavy leather or carbon fiber/resin there.

and a good sturdy pair of boots.

You swing the scarf at their head and when they go down you kick them in the bollocks...

For proper melee techniques I recommend the twenty home game training program at the Den or Upton Park.

The Millwall and West Ham fans are usually quite open to demonstrating proper melee etiquette.

They can't (easily) be taken away and used on me, and if they are empty then I can more easily use them.

Barring that, a short staff or two can be amazing things. If I am fighting zombies, a short cleaving sword, and if someone has some kind of armor, a sawed-off shotgun.
