3. And that's where they use a severed head for the ball?
They actually used to do that in ancient times.

Not my idea of a good time...

4. Well, that's certainly a Fantasy League!
:D

The flying skull reminds me of Janeane Garofalo's bowling ball with the skull of her dead father encased within
(It could also fly!)

8. It's based on a being traditionally associated with evil, however
the story portrays him in a different light, more as a prodigal than a creature of evil.

I've done a lot of research on religion and concepts of good and evil. It's all mythology to me. I'm not a follower of any religion, so I see this as just a good story idea. There are elements of pure fantasy in the story as well. It takes place on different worlds or planes of existence, which allows for incorporation of magic and mythological beings.

Of course, it's probably something that will make me very unpopular with the religious right should it ever get published (something I'd be prepared to live with).

9. It sounds like a compelling story to me
:)

I'm a "newager" so I've read all sorts of fringe spiritual stuff that would also make great fodder for stories. I have no problem using the things I know and questioning them, too. There's also the idea that things like morality, good & evil, and so on are simply human constructs and the "Supreme Being" doesn't care what we do, so long as it gets to experience it. The religious right probably doesn't like that idea, either ;)

It's fun playing with different worlds and planes of existence, so I'm sure you'll do fine. And if you're not in the Writing group here, you should go have a look around :)

10. It's good to question because questioning makes you think.
New age subjects are fascinating. "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" by Gary Zukav is one of my favorite books because it blends new age with new physics. Physics has always fascinated me.

One of the most interesting books I've read is "Bringers of the Dawn: Teachings from the Pleiadians" by Barbara Marciniak, which is probably considered new age. I'm not certain I believe the premise of the book, about beings of light from the Pleiades, but it presents a new way of looking at old wisdom. It's all an exercise for the mind, at the very least.

I've see the writer's group here and have wandered through a couple of times. Years ago, I was in an offline writer's group. It might be worth looking into. I'm not the best writer in the world. My ideas are good but cranking them has been a chore. Maybe that will ease the process a bit.

:)

11. The writer's group here is good, though slow.
It doesn't seem to be getting as much notice at the moment. Still, if you ask a writing question, you should get some kind of answer.

I recognize both of those books and authors, though I haven't read either. I have read bits and pieces of Delores Cannon's "The Convoluted Universe" and it's a wealth of story ideas :) Then again, the same holds true for Diane Kossy's "Kooks" :D

12. Yeah, all the interest forums seem a little slow here lately.
I'll try it though when I hit another snag in the writing process.

I've never read either of the books you mentioned, but they both look interesting.

So do you write? Anything in the works?

13. I do have a story I'm working over from a short story.
The weird thing is that I started to write the sequels only to end up writing really long sequels and just had to go back and fill out the short story. It's more of a chore, but I do have things to add. It's simply a matter of tying ideas together into a workable plot. It may just have to be a romantic "adventure" if I can't make the plot work as well as I'd like. Romance can get away with weaker plots ;)

It's basically about the life of a woman thrust into the world of magic by being turned into a djinni and not by choice. It's current-day Earth, maybe a few years ahead of now at best. I am working out more of their world-to-be as more magic comes into it while attempting to incorporate some of those spiritual ideas I hold to be "true". It's fun at the very least and has developed my writing skills all the more. And centaurs get to show up along the way, too :7

Going to bed now; allergy pill knocking me out...
Thanks for the conversation! We should start a thread in the Writer group, see if any of them join in ;)

14. Sorry, I crashed last night before your reply.
No, not a romance novel! Anything but that. The plot of your story sounds too good to turn into mush. Seriously, wouldn't you rather take a hot poker in the eye than write romance? The plots ARE week. Adventure is so much better. That's not to say that an adventure can't be romantic.

Once I bought a pile of romance novels from a second-hand book store with the express intent of learning the trade and cranking out a few cheap stories for money. The writer's guidelines for the romance publishers were off-putting enough, but just trying to get through the "stories" was a chore. They were all the same. A software program could have written them, just changing names, locales, time periods, etc.

Don't you love adventure stories with their ensembles of delightful characters? It sounds like you have the potential there for a really, good adventure. And centaurs are always good. It's always fun to read a story where you can associate with the character and taking someone from this world and thrusting her into a world of magic does sound like the makings of a great adventure story. Writing about the magical while incorporating spiritual truths probably does require a lot of writing finesse. But the story makes the effort worth it in the end, I believe. I'll let you know if mine ever gets finished. :)

My story began about 20 years ago, with a character I played in an online role-play forum. I'd never done any rp before so I joked about being the ex-wife of Satan. That was my character. Tongue-in-cheek of course. Christian forum members came down on me and that's when I decided (out of stubbornness) to examine religion as mythology and started writing. The story of Hades and Persephone always fascinated me so I started there, but left Greek and Roman mythology for Judeo-Christian and even Zoroastrian fables. Add to that a bit of dungeons and dragons and the story started to evolve. I also love wolves so one of protagonists is a sentient wolf based on my real life wolf-friend, the late Psyche.

Fantasy is great. You create your own world and keep it in line with what you believe and wish could be true. Talk about the ultimate head trip. I've also found a bit of myself in every character. Have you found this as well?

A thread in the writer's group about writing fantasy sounds good to me. Do you want to start it? :)
