1. Nanobots.
Self-reproducing nanobots will scavenge metal to build copies of themselves. Inevitably, some copies will be imperfect, and eventually some will evolve to target all that raw material in our environment, and then we're screwn.

Not my idea. I've been trying to recall specifics of a story I think was titled "Rust"--possibly in Omni magazine.

2. If garbage bags developed complexes regarding being chosen, brought home, then (bait and switch)
stuffed full of refuse and THROWN AWAY, we're all screwn..hell hath no fury like a Hefty scorned.
