My daughter is creating her own little socialist Lego town
My daughter, who is 10, is really into Legos. She and her brother have 30+ pounds of Lego blocks and they have some sets. My daughter has the only "girl" set that they have (except for a few over-priced sets) and she has been building out her little Lego town.

So, a few days ago she is telling me all about the town. Her town, she informed me, is off the grid. They recycle and use all of their waste to generate electricity. They also use solar power.

Then she informs me that they raise their own food and share with the homeless in the town. The homeless, she went on, are taken care of until they can find jobs under "Obama's economy." :) The townsfolk take care of the homeless by feeding them and giving them a nice place to stay until they are on their feet. She then proudly informed me that they can even ride the Lego horse!

Anyway, I am so proud of my little socialist. :) She loves to help others and wants to cure cancer when she's not being a rock star.

I love her so much. :loveya:

1. Well, what has President Barrick LegO'bama done lately, huh?
The Space ship he pledged to finish building sits there in a pile! The castle is in ruins! The town's only policeman is missing a hand and has the wrong head!

Building change? I think NOT!

:P

He has organized all of the Legos so far. He has put the one-armed, wrong-head policeman to work and given him a megaphone! He also has paid him with a $100 Lego money piece that we found.

The space program, alas, is still defunct as we are missing pieces to the Tie Fighter. x(

2. Like all awww-inspiring threads, this needs pictures
I was a major user of American Bricks when I was a kid and from my perspective she must be having a great time. Has she built a theatre for the town, where they can show movies or stage plays? I found that was very popular with my imaginary townspeople. :D

6. No theater but she has a barn!
And a house and some other stuff.

I'll take some pictures and upload them.

She loves building farms for them to raise their own crops. :D

3. Awesome, good for her! My 8-yr old wants to create more jobs for people.
She said her baby-brother can be president and take care of the homeless and make more jobs. I said, sure he can…, but you could run for President too. She must be hearing too much of the “birther” talk about Obama or something because she said, “Huh, I can be President?…. But, I was born in Mississippi!”

13. Mississippi is just as foreign as Hawaii!!
Tell her that I know some folks who can create some nice, fake Kenyan birth certificates. Those folks are right here on DU! I saw some of those works of art!

Bless her for wanting to create more jobs. It's amazing what they pick up, isn't it??

7. She would welcome the new addition to the town!
She is loving the Legos.

Most girls her age are into the Jonas Brothers and boys and such. She loves her some Legos and will play for hours with them.

...that is a wonderful way to learn about the importance of the commonweal. Tonka Town was my first taste of socialism and cooperation.

12. Growing up, my family was too poor to have Legos. Seriously.
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 12:25 PM by Jo March
My daughter and son are living large with their big bucket of Lego blocks. They build all kinds of things.

My daughter built a little building for my son's town. He said that he was going to make it a prison. That led to a big argument - the daughter does not want any prisons! All criminals will be given a second chance, she says. She said they will have to work off their crimes.

Seriously, listening to them while they build makes me chuckle and swell with pride. :D

14. We have our eye on another 10 pounds or so
The only way to buy them is in bulk. That way, you get all kinds of interesting pieces that the kids can use.

We have a Lego store at our nearby mall but it's too expensive to buy the blocks in bulk. So we get them second-hand. The kids don't mind. We have fun going through the pile.

We have found hoses, money, cassettes, megaphones, and even little tools! It's a lot of fun and keeps them occupied and creative.

16. I was always watching for those
but I never had the cash. Now that I kinda have cash, I rarely see them, and retail prices are rediculous, far more than I can or would choose to afford.

I still have a tin of my legos. I remember having more. Not sure if mom sequestered a share to keep for herself, or if memory just enlarged them.

17. Craigslist or ebay
That is the way to go. Sometimes you get really weird stuff though and you wonder what the pieces went to. LOL

19. sounds interesting
did not think of that. Ebay scares me for used legos, because you don't get to see or smell what you are getting. Baby vomit here we come?

What are some of the wierd things you have gotten?

20. You can wash the Legos in the dishwasher
Just put them in a container first. :) Any Legos with stickers will lose their stickers.

We've gotten some big pieces that look like maybe wing parts. Oh, and some parts of maybe an engine. Some SpongeBob pieces. A few Star Wars pieces. Disembodied arms, legs, and loose heads. Pieces of torsos and legs. Cockpit pieces. Wing pieces. Lots of tools - hammers, screwdrivers, shovels, rakes. Pieces that look like computers. Some pieces from a McDonald's set including pieces with Ronald McDonald and Cookie Monster's heads on them. Pieces from a Sesame Street set. All mixed in with all colors of blocks.

My daughter uses the cockpit pieces for her solar panels. :) Apparently they make great solar panels.

21. Did not think of that myself
My lego's were in far more need of laser shields than solar panels. Though they did conserve and reroute incoming laser energy to their own batteries for later use, which I suppose is similar in concept.

25. That is really cool!
:loveya:

Legos are the best toy ever created. If only they were made of biodegradable plastic they might be even better. But that's an improvement for down the road I guess. :0

It's wonderful that she's using them to really bring out her political creativity, and at such a young age!

27. She sounds like "Future City Competition" material
There is a program called the Future City Competition, and one projects students participate in is create city models from Legos. She sounds like she has a talent for urban design. Glad she is interested in these type of projects!

Good for her! :)

29. oh noes!
your daughter has 30 lbs of legos and some other little girls have NONE.

in a true socialist utopia, her legos would be justifiably seized, and dispersed so all the little girls could have legos.
