Firefox people: I am having a problem...
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 10:59 PM by CaliforniaPeggy
And it's on both my desktop, and my laptop.

Here's what's happening: I want to look at an old bookmark, one from more than a week ago. So I click on My DU to get the current ones, and then I click on Older Bookmarks.

They appear, though slowly. And then the kicker: I cannot scan down through that list.

And then everything's messed up. I can't get out of the bookmarks at all...error reports show up.

I am very frustrated!

Can anyone of you clever people help?

I hope so!

TIA!

Edit: spelling

2. You have to think in Russian. (That joke NEVER gets old)
Can't help you with the other problem, though, and not just because I have you on Ignore. I switched to Firefox a few months ago and haven't had any problems like that.

5. Uh-oh! I cannot think in Russian!
I hear you about never having that problem. This just literally started a couple of days ago...

I'd never had a problem like this before.

6. You're referring specifically to your DU bookmarks, right?
Are you having any similar troubles with other sites?

8. Yes, the DU bookmarks.
I haven't tried playing with any other websites.

I did experiment with my husband's Macs. They worked, although slowly.

3. Do you have any special add ons with your Firefox?
 Maybe they're not working right with the new upgrades and freezing the bookmarks. That's the only thing I can think that might be wrong. Normally I would tell you to clear your cache, but it seems strange that would happen on both the laptop and the PC.

4. My dear BeulahWitch...
I have no idea...what are special add ons?

I just have the basic firefox, as far as I know.

Oh, and I just was looking at my PM files...and nearly the same thing is happening there. They do eventually respond, but it takes awhile.

How do you clear your cache?

I am a first-class idiot when it comes to computers, alas...

Thanks for chiming in!

7. Things like "Ad-Block," special toolbars, media players built into the browser
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 11:33 PM by BuelahWitch
Firefox offers lots of free add ons. One time I added Win-Amp and Firefox wouldn't work at all. I had to use it in "safe-mode" until I figured out what the problem was and de-installed it.

If you click on "Tools" then "Clear Private Data" a box pops up that asks if you want to clear things like your cookies, browsing history and cache. Check only the things you want to be cleared and then click "Clear Private Data Now." I always keep my stored passwords, but I know if my cache is not cleared every so often it causes lots of problems.

Don't know if that's your problem, but it can't hurt. :hi:

Oh, and don't feel like an idiot. We all were in that spot at one time or another.

12. Try re-booting -
I do that whenever anything isn't quite right, and it works more often than not.

But I think the idea of cleaning your cache - something I do weekly - is probably your answer.

Good luck......................

15. OK...thank you...another dumb question.
How do I reboot?

Is that where I pretend to shut down the computer, and then don't?

Restart? that's what my computer says when I click the start button, and the menu for closing it down comes up.

There's no such thing as a dumb question, my dear. Just dummies who are too dumb to ask.

Don't forget that.

Now, RESTART!!!

14. Is it all
Bookmarks associated with My DU? If so it sounds like a DU problem and not Firefox problem.

You could also try posting this in The Computer Help and Support Group.

Sometimes just rebooting the computer fixes things.

Good Luck

20. Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks, you might need to restore one...
...I use Firefox as my primary browser, love the add-ins, etc...

...but occasionally the bookmark and profile files just get damaged. Here's Mozilla's step-by-step on how to restore bookmarks from your backup files:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

With Firefox, this is often the easiest way. It regularly creates backups, and when you're having problems, the shortest distance between two points is restore the bookmarks with a backup file.

The article applies to "lost" bookmarks but also damaged / corrupt files as well.

that aren't loading properly. Her Firefox bookmarks are fine.

I bet it's just an overloaded cache, something simple like that.................

23. I will need detailed instructions on how to do that.
I tried doing what BeulahWitch suggested upthread: clearing some private data.

I went to Tools, but there was no box for Clear Private Data.

So...

I'm stuck. Sorry...

24. try this
Press your Ctrl Shift Delete buttons at the same time. That will bring up the Clear Recent History box.

Put a checkmark under "cache", remove the other checkmarks if there are any unless you REALLY REALLY want to clear any of those other items.

Click "clear now".

I'm not sure which version of Firefox you are using but this works for the current one Firefox/3.5.2

The way to find the version of Firefox you are using is to click the Help at the top of the Browser and then click on "About Mozilla Firefox"

28. Try creating a new profile
This isn't so much a solution but a way to help pin down the source of the problem, whether it's something in your cookies, extensions, etc. You can have as many profiles as you want but I normally only use one except for cases like this where I need to isolate a problem.

It's really simple. You just close Firefox and go into the Start Menu and click Run. Then type 'firefox -P' followed by Enter and the profile dialog box will pop up. This page has the instructions along with pictures of the dialog boxes: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows

29. Have you turned it off and left it?
Turn it back on and see what happens?

OR, take it to the Computer Forum here at DU - I had a weird problem a few months ago, very troubling, and it looked like I was going to have to reinstall my whole Windows operating system - a horrid circumstance to consider - when someone realized I'd picked up a virus, because THE EXACT SAME THING HAD HAPPENED TO HER, but it hadn't even been publicized yet, it was that new and that sneaky.

She gave me step-by-step directions on how to fix it via PMs - she was wonderful and so patient and generous - and VOILA! My computer was restored and was as healthy as can be.

I bet they can fix you, so go over there.......................

31. My dear ohheckyeah!
No worries!

I've had many good suggestions here, but none of them have fixed the problem.

I know it's an interface between DU and Firefox. My husband has Netscape Navigator on his Vista machine, and it works just fine with DU. I tried it out last night, and was able to access my old DU bookmarks.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. One of these days, I may call my IT guy and have him look at my desktop. It's a pain getting this monster to him, though...

Thanks for coming by!

3.5.2 has some serious issues with certain addons. If you go to your toolbar and click on Tools and then on the menu that pops up click Add-ons. See what you have, ok?
