Why do women complain about their purse hurting their back when they know it has too much stuff?
I was at the store today with my mom and sister, and they started talking about their purses hurting their backs. I told them they should not have so much in them, and they looked at me for a second than kept talking to each other. I don't get it.

17. Don't carry a purse, drive one. Keep a box of emergency pontoons under the
driver's seat.

There you go!

5. you just called his mom and his sister dumb
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 01:18 PM by pitohui
probably not a courteous thing to do

in most societies women have to schlepp because men don't, then they're yelling at us, "where's the fucking sunscreen, you dumb bitch?"

damned if you do, damned if you don't

also for financial reasons women need to be better prepared, some guy with lots of money can leave everything at home and just buy everything he needs at double/triple the price at some convenience store, but damn few women have extra money to waste

23 lb. little body everywhere really buffed up my left arm. I guess I should load down my purse and her diaper bag to weigh the same so the other arm matches!! :P

34. Ditch the purse for a backpack
My wife did that a while ago, ditching the "mom purse" for a nice North Face woman's backpack. It's much comfier for her, she has both arms free to tackle our 3 and 5 year old, and I can easily wear the backpack in a pinch. The purse I could schlep but damn it hurt my shoulder and it made me whiny.

9. They're training you well for marriage later
I think you just learned that women do not necessarily want you to solve their problems. They just want to vent.
Also keep in mind that you may not think they need a hairbrush in their purse, they think they do.

41. They're teaching you that THEY WILL CARRY YOUR STUFF
Just schlepped around a convenion yesterday with my SO's keys, cigarettes, lighter, and phone. He did, however, carry his own wallet!! Woo-hoo!

Plus if he needs eyedrops or a brush, he knows he can borrow mine.

Men don't need purses because so many of them have women who will carry stuff for them!!!!

12. Did you know that purses can weigh a couple pounds empty?
I have one that weighs 3 lbs with not a thing in it. It's not big either but it has numerous pockets, dividers and sections to it. I have another similar bag but without the dividers and pockets and it's 2 lbs.

A lot of the purse related back pain has to do with carrying weight strictly on one shoulder. Men can have similar muscle and nerve pain in their lower back area from carrying and sitting on a wallet. It's called hip pocket syndrome.

I very seldom carry a purse anymore, then only hand held if I do. If I'm just going to the store, I carry a very small wallet type purse. My husband has switched to a non traditional wallet he keeps in his front pocket.

Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 04:58 PM by Petrushka
. . . "If there's ever an emergency such as a nuclear attack,
whatever we'd need is already in Mom's purse."

Edited to add:
That was years ago, before the fanny-pack was invented for Mom.
It's now the daughter who carries those huge shoulder bags with
everything but what she DOES need when she goes shopping with
Mom . . . I mean: a daybook? Why's she need a daybook in there?
Or the Wexler pink stuff? Etc.?

All that's necessary when one goes shopping or out to eat or even
to work is what now fits neatly into Mom's fanny-pack: Tic-Tacs,
Puffs tissues, Bandaids, Wash-n-Dry packets, Always, Tylenol or aspirin,
a nailfile & clippers, a small comb, car keys & house keys, a wallet
with change compartment (it's those quarters that weigh y' down, BTW),
a checkbook & pen, the grocery list & an envelope for cents-off coupons
plus another envelope for receipts, a small notebook & Bic pencil, a
safety pin or two, maybe a couple bobby-pins or a barrette, etc., etc.,
etc. . . . just in case there's a nuclear attack, y'know?!

33. No clue... I have always been happily purse-free
I just have a wallet and my keys (got rid of the cell phone) which I can put in a pocket. On the occasions when I have clothing without pockets, I carry a bag (not a purse) and I may stick an umbrella in there on rainy days. I can't think of anything else I need to carry around with me that would require much room let alone be too heavy to carry.

36. You are lucky they didn't make you carry one....
My purse has my wallet, which contains my money, credit cards, and various memberships to zoos, museums, and other places of kid fun.

Wet wipes. My kid gets sticky.

Tissues. My kid gets sticky.

Hand sanitizer. Other things are sticky.

Tampons. Pads. No comment.

Extra contacts. Can't drive without them.

Keys.

Cellphone.

If wearing makeup that day, then touchup equipment.

Inhaler.

Note pad.

Pen.

Bandanna. It's a towel variant (See, Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy.)

This is the bare minimum.

43. It's been a long time since Anthropology 101
but as I recall the first tools made by humans were not arrowheads and stone adzes but baskets made by women for carrying babies and food. Of course evidence for the woven baskets were harder for archaeologists to find so men got the unearned credit for the first tools for a long time.

Women have done the lions share of the job of feeding people since there have been people. That big purse is epigenetic if not genetically motivated.
