Why do men live this way?
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 12:39 PM by Moondog
A little while ago I realized I was hungry. Checked out my refrigerator. Basically, I had ice cubes, a jar of martini olives, half a stick of butter, and the remnants of what I think used to be a lime. Put whatever the last thing was into the garbage disposal and ground it up. Sigh. Still hungry.

So I headed over to my local Publix (local grocery chain) for some provisions. But once in the parking lot, I noticed the Quizno's next door. And I heard the siren song of a Turkey, Bacon and Guacamole sub. Hmmm, real food, or a quickie sub? Decisions, decisions.

Yeah, I went for the sub, ate it there, and came home.

Refrigerator is still empty. I could go back over there, but I got a new lens delivered on Friday that I want to go try out.

Looks like Chinese take-out for dinner.

Gotta hit the grocery store tomorrow. Damn. I hate grocery shopping.

1. One of my young male coworkers remarked that he'd never gone
grocery shopping till his girlfriend moved in with him recently. He said, "My idea of grocery shopping was a trip to McDonalds..."

34. I set out on my first grocery shopping trip ever as an adult living on my own
I had no idea what to buy,I just wandered around looking at everything. OK a box of cereal and milk, that is easy and will keep me alive!

The second time I went I was dreading it because I had no idea what to buy! My Mother always did the shopping and cooking. Then I struck gold! When I grabbed my shopping cart, there in the childs seat, was someone's shopping list! So I just grabbed that list and used it. Worked out perfectly.

14. see, I hate it, so
What I do is set aside an hour or so and make sure I don't have to do it any more often than necessary. Back when I was solo, I could generally make it a month between trips, and still keep food stocked for home cooking. Not counting trips to the butcher, which is not the same at all. That place smells like meat.

46. Ugh! That just means more trips to the grocery.
I, as a female, go once a week to feed my family for that whole week. Some of my friends do go monthly for a month's worth of food, but I can't buy for a whole month. I am good just to buy what we need for the week, but if I had to go more than once a week, it would drive me nuts.

12. The only thing that motivates me sufficiently to go into a grocery is hunger.
And I just go through an aisle at a time grabbing whatever looks good, or easy, preferably both. I have actually noticed people eyeballing my shopping cart, then me, shaking their heads and walking off. Which really doesn't add to the experience, you know?

16. We do?
I never ate out when I was solo. I stocked as much preservable food as I could fit in the cabinets, generally choosing categories of items that I could successfully cook (which meant no rice, basically). And made regular stops at the butcher.

It was culture shock for my wife, who was used to eating out 3-6 times a week for dinners, plus lunch, and breakfast. We have reached a medium. We eat out once a week, sometimes twice. More when its too hot to cook. Less when I am more motivated to do the cooking. And I don't get to make nearly daily stops at the butchers anymore.

41. Secret of rice
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 08:50 PM by Stephanie
Fill pot with water until it is one inch. or one knuckle measure, above the rice level. Add a pat of butter and maybe some spices. turn on heat to high. After it starts to boil, turn it to the lowest possible flame and put a paper towel between the pot and the lid. Leave it on the stove for the exact amount of time on the package instructions. Then take it off the stove and let it sit for ten minutes before you take off the lid. Perfect rice.

Secret of rice: rice cooker. Problem solved.

I would have eaten so much rice if i had known about cheap rice cookers. I frikin love sticky rice, non sticky rice, all rice. I have no doubt knowing that years earlier would have saved me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in food costs.

grocery stores only sell beer and wine. For liquor you have to go to a liquor store. They aren't state-run here, but they are separate.

I went almost every day. Unfortunately, my wife has laid down a strict "no dating" policy since we met so I don't go there as much.

(Honestly - if you live in a single-heavy neioghborhood go to Trader Joes after work. TONS of women and many of them single. I made a lot of progress there over the years.)

Had one near my house in northern VA (metro DC area), but there aren't any here in FL. And you're right about the demographic there.

29. I love shopping for groceries.
My father was the shopper in my family, and I learned from him at a very young age. One of thew highlights of my week was shopping with him as a child, getting up early to be at the market when they opened, and getting the freshest baked goods, meats, and produce of the day.

My mother couldn't shop to save her life.

Even after working in retail and wholesale food in one capacity or another my entire life, I still love going to market.

Funny, my two sons are smart grocery shoppers; my daughter, however, is just pitiful.

I'm a single female and I hate grocery shopping. Don't particularly care to cook either.

I eat a LOT of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And, as long as there is dog food in the house, shopping is optional. It only becomes a necessity when I am out of dog food.

I'm just not use to making food for myself. So I'd rather spend a little extra and have someone make it for me.

Get a can of Progresso minestrone. Heat it up in a pot on the stove. In another pot, boil some pasta until done. Strain. Add to soup. Pour it all in a bowl. Add heaping spoons of parmesan cheese. Very satisfying. I had a male roommate who lived on this and I thought it was ingenious.

to keep lots of pasta and spaghetti sauce on hand.

Here's a tip: after you boil the pasta and mix it with the sauce, put it in a baking dish, top it w/mozzarella and bake it for about 25 minutes on 350! It is so good and leftovers are actually better!

53. Guys, you NEED this book!!
I got it and it helped me make good but simple recipes.

It's called THE I NEVER COOKED BEFORE COOKBOOK, by Jo Coudert.

http://www.amazon.com/Never-Cooked-Before-Cookbook/dp/0451121732/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251087033&sr=1-2

Well, heck, it's out of print.

It assumes you know NOTHING. Tells you how to stock a larder, what terms like "baste" mean (hint: has nothing to do with sewing).

Recipes say: 1) do this; 2)Do this; etc.

I make Beef Stroganoff from this book, b/c you brown your meat, brown your onions and shrooms, and then throw in a can of Beef Gravy, instead of patiently stirring a bunch of ingredients together.
