Have I told you how much I hate snipers in online auctions?

I had the winning bid on an 1864 report from Secretary of War Edwin Stanton on union activities from 1861-1862.

I HAD the winning bid up until the very last minute. I lost by one fricking dollar. :grr: Why can't people man up and bid with enough time for people to counter if possible?

If you are bidding at eBay there are lots of websites that will put in a snipe bid for you for free. The reason why people do it is that 1) they win when they do it and 2) you get things cheaper. Bidding it up early only benefits the seller.

No fun when you don't have the technology, but it's fairly easy to find a site that will snipe for you on the the Bay.

2. this isn't ebay

it's Goodwill's online auction site. I've found and won some really nice old books for cheap on that site. Since it's not as big as ebay yet, things usually go far cheaper than on ebay or other book auction sites. I may need to find if there are sites that will snipe for you on goodwill as well.

3. Snipe it yourself...

One window with the auction, displaying time remaining. Second window with "confirm bid" (or whatever it is on the Goodwill site) with your maximum amount (plus some small random value, like $0.17, attached).

Refresh until you have a bit of time left, then click the other button.

I'm in the "join 'em" camp, and that's the best way I know.
