Nude plus-sized model in Glamour causes stir
The nude photo this week that everyone is talking about isn't of some young Hollywood starlet but of Lizzi Miller, a 20-year-old plus-sized model.

Glamour magazine published a photo of Lizzi, naked, in its September issue. And Lizzi, who appeared on NBC's "Today" show, says she can't believe that people actually like the photo because she expected to hear a lot of negative comments about her size 12 body.

Here's what Glamour's editor-in-chief Cindi Leive wrote in her blog:

"It's a photo that measures all of three by three inches in our September issue, but the letters about it started to flood my inbox literally the day Glamour hit newsstands. 'I am gasping with delight...I love the woman on p 194!" said one...then another, and another, and another and another and another."

Me? I can't believe that anyone size 12 is considered plus-sized in the fashion industry.

1. She was on Larry King the other nite
caught just a bit of it and they showed the photo.

She's a very beautiful young lady. Some may want to call her "plus" size. I wouldn't.

73. Snopes was quoting a fashion editor who . . .
. . . had an opportunity to try on some of Marilyn Monroe's clothing. BUT . . .

Snopes is incorrect when it says that "...today's size 10 dress is smaller than the size
10 dress of fifty years ago...." Today's size 10 dress pattern is sized for a 32-1/2" bust,
25" waist, & 34-1/2" hips; but a size 10 dress pattern in the 50s would be for a 28" bust, a
22" waist, & 31" hips . . . meaning that, due to today's vanity sizing, today's "size 10" dress
is larger.

In the 50s, with Marilyn Monroe's measurements taken into consideration**, that "hourglass figure"
of hers would have needed a 16/18 top and a 10/12 bottom if the outfit was full-skirted; but, with
a bit or expert alteration at the waistline, a 14/16 in a slim-skirt or slacks would work.
So . . . anyway . . . I sent Snope's a long-winded message to that effect.

16. I think it depends on how the weight is distributed.
Some overweight women look great and can wear tiny bikinis because the weight isn't all in one place. If it's evenly distributed, it looks great. Unfortunately, I'm not evenly distributed.

I went from a size 5 to 18 over 20 years after having kids and the my metabolism disappearing into thin air. I felt pretty good when I was a 8-10, hopefully will get back there someday, I am giving it a noble effort anyway.

7. Yes, that really got me. I used to be a size 11-12 and
definitely did not see myself as a plus size. I've lost 20 pounds, so if 12 is considered by the media to be plus-sized, I guess you could call me normal size now because I wear from a 6 to a 9, which is fairly small.

9. I saw that, to mixed feelings
Mixed because while I applaud seeing a real woman with a normal body in a fashion magazine, I also wonder if we'll see any others.

Also, as to the "plus" thing, I agree that 12 is not 'plus' but if I am not mistaken this particular woman is pretty tall, no? I ask because - and as a guy I don't always get women's sizing - I wonder if being tall can put a woman into the 'plus' category, much like how men's stores often correlate big and tall together, and being tall-ish myself I often have to buy larger clothes.

Anyway, good for her, and good for the magazine for running that photo without retouching the photo. As a photo editor, I would love to see more honest photography in magazines, as most of it is anything but, and I don't mean correcting color balance, or lighting issues. I am sick to death of being shown fake people with impossible bodies, and I think it really is damaging to the collective psyche of women in America, much more than men.

She looked great and powerful and beautiful. and proportioned just fine.

33. No, all models are generally tall for women --
there are very, VERY few models that are under 5'8, even print models -- I am 5'4 and most the models I worked with over the years towered over me.

The "Plus" attribute it really about weight. The preference for a model is to be 5'8 or over and in the 110 pound range. And that makes for a very skinny model. And a very unrealistic portrayal for women to view.

32. Criteria for plus size (12-18 for print, 12-24 for runway and size 18 for fit modeling.)
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 02:18 PM by jakeXT
Criteria For Plus Size Modeling

Generally ranges from 12-18 for print, 12-24 for runway and size 18 for fit modeling.

Height – 5′4″ and under for petite, 5′8″ and above for regular and 5′9″ and above for high fashion.

A toned and healthy body

Note – Some women and teens still find work even though they don’t fit these statistics exactly

I don't know her name, googling only brings up pictures and article from several good looking plus size models

http://uglysally.com/blog/blog-fashion/big-girl-you-are-beautiful-mode-sexy-pour-les-rondes

When Crystal Renn aspired to be a model as a 14-year-old in Mississippi, an agent (not from Ford) told her she had to lose 9 inches off of her hips first.

Renn ended up doing that, and then some, going from 175 lbs and 5' 8" to 95 lbs and an inch and a half taller in two years, eventually moving to New York City and launching a successful modeling career.

After conquering the eating disorder that transformed her body, Renn, now 23, is happy to call herself a size 12 plus-size model, who, with her new curvy figure has walked the runway for Gaultier, graced the pages of Vogue and starred in ads for Dolce & Gabbana.

61. In the bizarro world of fashion where size 2 is chunky
Sometimes I think they'd like us to get so thin that we'd disappear...

57. When I am size 12 I'm skinny. I'm sorry that is not plus sized. Especially for someone tall.

65. The plus-size mannequins are size 10 ....
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 09:27 PM by kwassa
at a major chain department store I used to work for.

Plus-sized clothes start at 16 in this store, so to dress the mannequins the clothing was pinned all up the back so that the mannequin didn't seem to be floating in the material.

edit to add:

the "regular" mannequins are size 4.

69. my sister used to work at Deb's
and she loved it, because they actually sold stylish clothing for "plus" girls. She spent half her damn paycheck there every week.

anyway, I'm pretty sure they actually had mannequins that were sized appropriately for "plus"

79. FWIW
There was a time when I was less than size 14, but that was a long time ago on a drill pad far, far away.

Had my annual physical a couple weeks ago. After running the gauntlet, doctor walks in, tosses clip board on desk and says, "Every thing is normal. Go home. I wish everyone your age were as healthy as you are. See ya next year."

So, size zip or good health? May not be an either/or, but if it is, tough choice.

Ms Miller is lovely.
