Greetings from NYC!
I’m finally back in NYC in NYC and preparing for my move into my dorm room on Sunday. Right now I'm still in the getting-lost-outside-of-grand-central stage, but I'm slowly adjusting to my new surroundings and learning my way around town. After a shopping trip today I'm the new owner of a rug that will be delivered on Monday along with a student ID with a mugshot-esque photo. Somehow I have managed to take a photo worse than my driver's license. I didn't know that was possible.

I have three suitcases full of clothes, shoes, books, computer/video equipment, and a quilt for my bed. I *had* one bag that included three sets of sheets for my bed but that bag is now with other unclaimed baggage at Laguardia airport. As a result I'll be visiting the airport much sooner than I planned.

Moving over 1,000 miles across is proving to be a stressful experience full of mistakes and mishaps, but as I look out the window and see the city that I'll be living in for at least the next 4 years I realize that all the mistakes and mishaps are worth it... even if they cost me the cab fare to Laguardia Airport and back for sheets. ;)

A few pics from my cell that I uploaded to facebook -

2. Been there, done that, and didn't get the T-shirt.
May your years in NYC be delightful. That will be an education in itself, not to mention the real education you acquire at the university.

You're gonna love the food that's available. I wanna hear reports, frequently. The food blew me away.

I lived in Jersey City across the river, but I got the full flavor of NYC on many occasions.

3. Welcome!

:hi:

I've lived here for nearly a year and I still get lost frequently. Usually in Brooklyn. I love it here though; it's the greatest place I've ever lived...I can find falafel at 2am if I want it and there is always something going on. Always.

If time is not a factor, it is possible to get to LGA by taking the 7 train then transferring to the Q33 bus or the 5 train then transferring to the M60 bus...the cab'll be expensive. The MTA trip planner is a life-saver until you get a lay of the subway map...if you have a cell phone capable of internet access, Hopstop and Google Maps both give great point-to-point subway directions.

Welcome to NYC!

5. Glad to hear you're in NYC!
I loved my years there, and I hope you will, too. A mishap or two are de rigeur on any big move like that...

Looking forward to hearing about your new life at NYU!

6. What is that structure that looks like the Champs Elysees monument in Paris?
It looks a lot like it. Almost Las Vegas style!

11. The Arch in Washington Square Park
Erected in 1889 to celebrate the centennial of Washington's inauguration. And, yes, it was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe by famed architect Stanford White.

NYC is one of my favorite places in the world, and I'm slightly jealous that you get to live there.

15. It is possible to get to LaGuardia on transit
take any subway to 125th St. and catch the M60 bus.

Of course, I have no idea how big the box of sheets is, for the return trip...
