Salaam Bombay + 20 years = Slumdog Millionaire (spoilers)
Just watched Salaam Bombay last night, and I saw Slumdog several weeks ago on DVD.

I was struck by how many elements of Salaam Bombay recurred in Slumdog. Orphaned main character, love interest sold to pimp/matchmaker, trip to Agra to fleece the tourists, both main characters chai boys.

Does anyone with more knowledge of Indian cinema know if these things are common themes in Indian film or if it was just that Salaam Bombay was a big influence on modern Indian authors/filmmakers?
