Please, people...wear more than boxer shorts when riding your motorcycle.
So we were watching The Weather Channel this evening (at the request of my 2-year-old son, who likes to see the storms on the radar map) when we heard a siren close by. After a minute, we heard yet another louder siren belonging to a fire truck. I went to the other side of the house to see what direction it was headed in, and saw it fly right past our window. I could see that there were a bunch of emergency vehicle lights a few houses down, so I figured I'd take my son to see what was going on. (He loves firetrucks and whatnot.)

We saw the following (all numbers approximate, but pretty accurate, I think):

2 firetrucks
4 police cars
3 EMT cars
1 ambulance

Why? Because one of the guys that lives down the street was riding his motorcycle around the neighborhood wearing only his boxer shorts, and he crashed into a car parked along the curb (possibly because he was swerving out of the way of a moving car, or so I was told...people tend to go WAY too fast around here). He was moving when they wheeled the stretcher to the ambulance, and I was told that he was pretty coherent. Obviously, he got lucky.

We were able to use this as an educational opportunity for our son...no riding your bike without good clothing coverage and a helmet. And no riding a motorcycle EVER. :)

3. He appeared to be in one piece.
It was dark, so I couldn't tell how badly he was scraped.

6. War story
Hubby rides a Bajaj Chetak scoot. Quick and dirty, he's scooting along, obeying the law; a jerk pulls in front of him, making a turn. Hub does a 180 across the hood of jerk's car and bounces on the pavement a couple of times. When the dust settles, cop says, "Man, you should have been hurt bad." (Hub was fine, even waved off the medics). Hub answers, "That's why I dress funny."

He always wears top o'line crash helmet, armored jacket, pants, gloves and boots.

8. oh no kidding
I can't count the times lately I have seen some idiot riding a motorcycle with shorts, flip flops and maybe a t-shirt on. My wife asked me why they would do such a thing and the only answer I could come up with was that they must not have hit the pavement yet.

In 35 years of riding, I've been down a few times and I can tell you, nothing can take the place of some good clothing, boots and a helmet.
