She is now officially retired. Just a couple of minutes ago, she left her office for the very last time and gave me a farewell hug. She says she's gonna keep in touch with me to make sure I'm holding up well under the new boss as well as with life in general.
Sandy has been my boss for just under 11 years, which is the longest stretch I've ever gone under any one supervisor. She was a veteran of the failed Superconducting Super Collider project, which could have possibly kicked the LHC's ass if so many players didn't get greedy or scared. Sandy has taught me a hell of a lot at work, and she's been very patient with my goofs and mistakes. I was like a diamond in the rough, and although I've still got a few rough edges, I think she's proud of how much of an asset I've turned out to be.
But now I'm sitting at my little desk in a wing of office suites that suddenly feels very empty and lonely. I'm very sad to be losing not only my boss, but also a friend.
It's good for her, though. She's retiring to a quieter corner of Texas, where she'll have plenty of time to dote on her new grandbaby.
God speed, Sandy. You will be missed.
